Why in the News?<\/strong><\/h2>\n

The European Union<\/a> has recently launched a Red Sea mission named Mission Aspides<\/span>, which aims to protect shipping in the Red Sea region from Yemen’s Houthi rebels.<\/p>\n

What is the need for a mission in the Red Sea region?<\/strong><\/h2>\n

1.<\/strong> The Iran-backed Houthis, who exert control over much of war-torn Yemen, have been disrupting the vital shipping lane<\/span> in the Red Sea region since November 2023.<\/p>\n

2.<\/strong> They claim their actions are in solidarity with Palestinians in Gaza<\/span> during the Israel-Hamas conflict.<\/p>\n

3.<\/strong> Recently, a Greek-flagged cargo ship owned by the U.S. was attacked twice in the Gulf of Aden, near the Red Sea.<\/p>\n

4.<\/strong> The EU states that the mission Aspides, initially set for one year<\/span>, is aimed at safeguarding civilian shipping in the Red Sea<\/span> and assures that no attacks will be conducted on Yemeni soil.<\/p>\n

1.<\/strong> Location<\/strong>:
\na.<\/strong> The Red Sea is a seawater inlet of the Indian Ocean lying between Africa and Asia.
\nb.<\/strong> It is connected to the Indian Ocean<\/span> in the south through the Bab el Mandeb strait<\/span> and the Gulf of Aden.<\/span>
\nc.<\/strong> To the north of the Red Sea<\/span> lies the Sinai Peninsula<\/span>, the Gulf of Aqaba<\/span> and the Gulf of Suez<\/span>.<\/p>\n

2.<\/strong> Bordering Countries<\/strong>: Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Yemen, Sudan, Eritrea and Djibouti.<\/p>\n

Who are Houthis?<\/strong><\/h2>\n

1.<\/strong> The Houthis are a rebel group in Yemen<\/span>. They have been fighting a civil war with the Yemen government for almost a decade.<\/p>\n

2.<\/strong> They are named after the Houthi tribe who follow Zaydi Shia beliefs<\/span>.<\/p>\n

3. <\/strong>They are in power in northern Yemen<\/span>, including the official capital Sanaa<\/span>. The official government now operates from Aden.<\/p>\n

4.<\/strong> They are supported by Iran<\/span>. On the other hand, the Yemen government is backed by Saudi Arabia<\/span> and Western countries<\/span>.<\/p>\n
