Why in the news?<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Assam government has recently announced that it would undertake a mission to reclaim the chars from encroachers to safeguard the \u201cecological integrity<\/span>\u201d of the Brahmaputra Valley.<\/p>\n

Definition<\/strong>– The riverine areas (island) of the river Brahmaputra<\/span> are locally known as Char<\/span>.
\nChars are island-like silt depositions<\/span> in the lower parts of river basins. They are made of sand and silt<\/span>. They are created naturally<\/span> due to the accumulation<\/span> of sediment transported in water from melting glaciers<\/span> and eroding riverbanks<\/span>.<\/p>\n

Geographical features<\/strong><\/p>\n

1) They are subjected to erosion on their upstream<\/span> and deposition on the downstream<\/span>.<\/p>\n

2) This affects the geometry and location of the chars<\/span> during floods almost every year.<\/p>\n

What are the problems of char areas?<\/strong><\/h2>\n

1) Lack of basic infrastructure<\/strong>– These areas lack all weather communication<\/span> with the main banks and reliable means of intra and inter char mobility<\/span>. They have inadequate growth of transport<\/span> and basic infrastructure like surface roads, health and drinking water<\/span> etc.<\/p>\n

2) Regular Flooding<\/strong>– There is constant threat from flood and erosion<\/span> during the rainy season.<\/p>\n

3) Geographical barriers<\/strong>– The land mass is segregated and cut off from each other. This makes it very difficult for taking any major scheme for road communication<\/span>, irrigation<\/span>, Power supply<\/span> or setting of educational institutions.<\/p>\n

4) Demographic issues- <\/strong>These\u00a0chars are inhabited and cultivated by Bengali Muslims<\/span>. They are often viewed as \u201cillegal immigrants<\/span>\u201d or \u201cBangladeshi<\/span>\u201d.<\/p>\n
