Why in the news?<\/strong><\/h2>\n

A team of researchers has recently discovered a new species of damselfly at the Ponmudi hills in Thiruvananthapuram district of Kerala.<\/p>\n

Description<\/strong>– Ponmudi means \u2018Golden Hill<\/span>\u2019 or \u2018Golden Peak<\/span>\u2019.<\/p>\n

Location<\/strong>– It is located in the state of Kerala<\/span>. It is part of the Western Ghats mountain range<\/span>.<\/p>\n

Biosphere reserve<\/strong>– The hills are a part of the<\/span> Agasthyamalai landscape<\/span>, at the southernmost tip of the Western Ghats.<\/p>\n

Significance<\/strong>– These hills are<\/span> biodiversity-rich<\/span>, and recently the third species of damselfly has been discovered from this region.<\/p>\n

Description<\/strong><\/td>\nIt is named Cliffside Bambootail (Phylloneura rupestris).
\nIt belongs to a group called bambootails (Because of their long abdomen that resembles bamboo stalks<\/span>). There are two types of Bambootails- Cliffside Bambootail<\/span> and Myristica Bambootail<\/span>.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Why the species name is Cliffside Bambootail?<\/strong><\/td>\nCliffside Bambootail has been named because it lays eggs in the moss beds over rock cliffs. <\/span>This behaviour is in contrast to that of Myristica Bambootail<\/span> that lays its eggs on the surface roots of riparian trees.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Habitat<\/strong><\/td>\nIt is endemic<\/span> to the Western Ghats. It has been recorded only in the area between the Nilgiri Hills and Sharavathi Valley, north of the Palghat Gap.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Significance<\/strong><\/td>\nThe discovery is significant, because for over 160 years, the genus Phylloneura was considered to be monotypic<\/span>.
\nMonotypic<\/span>– It is a term used to describe a species that does not have any intra-related species or sub-species<\/span> within its population.
\nHowever, this discovery has repudiated the notion of Phylloneura species being monotypic.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n
