A fisherman from Maharashtra\u2019s Palghar district was attacked by a bull shark in the Vaitarna river.<\/p>\n

About Vaitarna River<\/h2>\n

Origin<\/strong>– The river rises in the Sahyadri hill<\/span> range in the Nasik district of Maharashtra State.<\/p>\n

Mouth<\/strong>– It drains into the Arabian Sea<\/span> near Mumbai.<\/p>\n

Tributary<\/strong>– Left bank tributary<\/span>-Tanya
\nRight bank tributaries-<\/span> Pinjal, Dehraja, and Surya<\/p>\n

Significance<\/strong>– The Vaitarna supplies much of Mumbai’s drinking<\/span> water. It is the largest river<\/span> in the Northern Konkan region and drains Maharashtra’s whole Palghar district.<\/p>\n

West flowing river<\/strong>– It is one of the west flowing rivers<\/span> in the region North of Mumbai and South of the Tapi river.<\/p>\n

Threats<\/strong>– The Vaitarna is one of the most polluted<\/span> rivers in India.<\/p>\n

Description<\/strong><\/td>\nThe name “bull shark” comes from the shark’s stocky shape, broad<\/span>, flat<\/span> snout<\/span>, and aggressive<\/span>, unpredictable behaviour
\nIt is also known as the Zambezi shark in Africa<\/span> and the Lake Nicaragua shark<\/span> in Nicaragua<\/span>.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Habitat<\/strong><\/td>\nIt is commonly found worldwide in warm<\/span>, shallow waters<\/span> along coasts and in rivers.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Characteristics<\/strong><\/td>\n1) Bull sharks are euryhaline<\/span> and can thrive in both salt and fresh water.
\nNOTE- <\/strong>Euryhaline- Ablility to live in waters of a wide range of salinity.
\n2) Despite their ability to survive in freshwater habitats<\/span>, they can not be categorised as true freshwater sharks<\/span>.
\n3) It has the unique ability to inhabit fresh, saline, and brackish waters.
\n4) It is known for its adaptability<\/span>. It can be found far upstream<\/span> in several major rivers worldwide.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Threat to humans<\/strong><\/td>\nIt is considered particularly dangerous to humans due to its large size<\/span>, freshwater presence<\/span>, and proximity to human populations<\/span>.
\nIt is often considered the most dangerous<\/span> shark species.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
