Why in the news?<\/h2>\n

The government has recently increased the allocation for Sustainable and Inclusive Development of the Natural Rubber Sector by 23% to Rs 708.7 crore for the next two financial years. The scheme runs parallel with the tenure of the award of 15th finance commission and is run by the Rubber Board of India<\/span>.<\/p>\n

Functions<\/strong><\/td>\n1) It\u00a0is responsible for the development of the rubber industry in the country by assisting and encouraging research<\/span>, development<\/span>, extension and training activities<\/span> related to rubber.
\n2) It maintains statistical data<\/span> of rubber. The Board also takes steps to promote marketing of rubber and undertake labor welfare<\/span> activities.
\n3) It issues licences<\/span> to rubber producers, manufacturers, and exporters\/traders. This licence is known as the Rubber Board licence\/registration<\/span>. It is mandatory<\/span> for rubber manufacturing<\/span> and export.<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n

What are the favourable conditions for growth of rubber?<\/h2>\n

1) Temperature<\/strong>– It requires high temperature<\/span> throughout the year \u2013 ranging between 20\u00b0-35\u00b0C or average monthly mean of 27\u00b0C.
\n2) Rainfall<\/strong>– It requires heavy rainfall<\/span>. The annual average rainfall of not less than 200 cm is optimum. Rubber tree thrives well when the distribution of rainfall is uniformly high all over the year.<\/span>
\n3) Soil<\/strong>– Deep, friable, well-drained soils are ideal for rubber cultivation They promote root devel\u00adopment<\/span>, and acidic soils are also suitable.<\/p>\n

Some important facts about rubber production-<\/strong>
\n1) Thailand<\/span> is the leading<\/span> Rubber producing country in the world. Thailand is followed Indonesia<\/span> and China<\/span> at the second and third place respectively.
\n2) India<\/span> stands at fourth position<\/span> in Rubber production.
\n3) Traditional rubber-growing states comprising Kerala<\/span> and Tamil Nadu<\/span> account for 81% of production.<\/p>\n
