Why in the News?<\/h2>\n

Recently, the Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage (INTACH) has been making efforts to obtain UNESCO recognition<\/span> for the yearly ‘Paruveta Utsavam<\/span>‘ (mock hunting festival) as an ‘intangible cultural heritage<\/a>‘.<\/p>\n

1. About<\/strong>– It is an annual mock hunting festival<\/span> held at the Sri Narasimha Swamy temple<\/span> in Ahobilam, Andhra Pradesh, India.<\/p>\n

2. Symbol<\/strong>– The festival serves as a testament to communal harmony. D<\/span><\/span>uring<\/span> this time, the deity from the inner sanctum of the temple is carried to the 32 Chenchu tribal settlements<\/span> surrounding Ahobilam for a period of 40 days<\/span>.<\/p>\n

3. Belief<\/strong>:
\na.<\/strong> According to legend, Lord Vishnu, in his<\/span> Narasimha form<\/span>, married Maha Lakshmi<\/span>, who was born as a tribal girl named Chenchulakshmi in Ahobilam<\/span>.
\nb.<\/strong> The Kurnool District Gazetteers, published by the Government Press in 1881, documents various beliefs of the Chenchu tribes<\/span>. They include their respect for Ahobila Narasimha as their brother-in-law<\/span> and the tradition of inviting him home for Makara Sankranti<\/span>.<\/p>\n

4.<\/strong> Activities:<\/strong>
\na.<\/strong> Participants observe ‘Narasimha Deeksha<\/span>‘ by wearing yellow robes<\/span>, ‘Tulasi Mala<\/span>‘, and practicing celibacy<\/span>.
\nb.<\/strong> During the ceremony, tribal members<\/span> shoot arrows at the deity’s palanquin<\/span> as a gesture of respect<\/span> and protection<\/span>.
\nc.<\/strong> Paruveta Utsavam is celebrated by people of all castes<\/span>.<\/p>\n

5. <\/b>Administrative Body & Tribal link:<\/strong>
\n<\/b>a.<\/strong> The 600-year-old Ahobila Mutt<\/span>, through the ‘Guru Parampara’, oversees the temple.
\nb.<\/strong> It has promoted this tribal festival to spread Srivaishnavism<\/span> among the local tribes.
\nc. <\/strong>The connection between the tribes and Lord Vishnu is affirmed in Vasanthika Parinayam, <\/span>a Sanskrit drama<\/span> written by the 7th Jeeyar of the Mutt<\/span> centuries ago.<\/p>\n

About the Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage (INTACH)<\/h2>\n

1. About<\/strong>– It is a non-profit charitable organization<\/span> registered under the Societies Registration Act, 1860.<\/p>\n

2. Established<\/strong>– It was founded in 1984<\/span> in New Delhi.<\/p>\n

3. Objective<\/strong>– Its goal is to establish a membership organization to promote awareness<\/span> and lead conservation efforts for heritage in India<\/span>.<\/p>\n
