Why in the news?<\/h2>\n

The Tamil Nadu government has recently banned the sale and production of cotton candy<\/span> after it was found that a toxic chemical<\/span> Rhodamine-B was being used to make it.<\/p>\n

Description<\/strong>– It is a chemical commonly used for dyeing in various industries, including textiles, paper, leather, and paints. It serves as a colouring agent, producing red and pink hues.<\/p>\n

Physical Properties-<\/strong> When in powdered form, it appears green. However, when water is added, it changes into pink colour.<\/p>\n

Why it is harmful?<\/h2>\n

1) Neurological Damage<\/strong>: Regular consumption of food containing Rhodamine B can damage the cerebellum tissue in the brain and the brainstem<\/span>. This damage can result in functional abnormalities and hinder motor<\/span> functioning.<\/p>\n

2) Liver Dysfunction and Cancer Risk<\/strong>: Rhodamine B ingestion can cause liver dysfunction<\/span> and may increase the risk of cancer<\/span>. Larger quantities consumed over a brief period may lead to acute poisoning<\/span>.<\/p>\n

NOTE-<\/strong> As per the Food Safety Standards Act, 2006,<\/span> preparation, packaging, importing, selling and serving food items with Rhodamine-B in wedding ceremonies and other public events is a punishable offence<\/span>.<\/p>\n

What are the food colours that are allowed by the food safety act?<\/h2>\n

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI)<\/a>, India’s top food safety regulator, permits only a limited number of natural and synthetic colors in food products.<\/p>\n

1.<\/strong> Permitted natural food colors-<\/strong>\u00a0carotene<\/span> and carotenoids (yellow, orange)<\/span>, chlorophyll (green), riboflavin (yellow), caramel<\/span>, Annatto (orange-red, from the seed of an American tree), saffron, and curcumin (yellow, from turmeric).<\/p>\n

2.<\/strong> Approved synthetic colors<\/strong>– Red from Ponceau 4R, Carmoisine, and Erythrosine<\/span>; yellow from Tartrazine<\/span> and Sunset Yellow FCF<\/span>; blue from Indigo Carmine and Brilliant Blue FCF; and green from Fast Green FCF.<\/p>\n
