{"id":28381,"date":"2018-10-24T12:04:58","date_gmt":"2018-10-24T06:34:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.forumias.com\/?p=28381"},"modified":"2018-10-24T12:05:03","modified_gmt":"2018-10-24T06:35:03","slug":"in-tightrope-walk-india-schedules-talks-with-iran-and-u-s","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/in-tightrope-walk-india-schedules-talks-with-iran-and-u-s\/","title":{"rendered":"In tightrope walk, India schedules talks with Iran and U.S."},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thehindu.com\/news\/national\/tightrope-walk-for-india-schedules-talks-with-iran-us\/article24413946.ece\">In tightrope walk, India schedules talks with Iran and U.S.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong><u>News:<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>India\u2019s tough situation vis-\u00e0-vis its relations with Iran and the U.S.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong><u>Important facts:<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong><u>Regarding Meeting<\/u><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ul>\n<li>Ahead of the first set of U.S. sanctions on Iran, the Indian government is planning to hold talks with Iranian and American officials.<\/li>\n<li>This would be the first face-to-face meeting with the U.S. since sanctions were reimposed.<\/li>\n<li>The official\u2019s team would also clarify the U.S. position on the Rupee-Rial mechanism it put into place in 2012, which allowed it to import oil from Iran and supply essential foods and necessities to\u00a0Iran from a UCO bank-operated fund created with up to half of the import figure in rupees.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ol start=\"2\">\n<li><strong><u>America\u2019s stand:<\/u><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ul>\n<li>As a part of sanctions, America wants several countries including India to cut down oil imports from Iran to \u201czero\u201das well as cutting off trade ties.<\/li>\n<li>The first set of U.S. sanctions will target Iran\u2019s automotive sector, trade in gold, and other key metals.<\/li>\n<li>The remaining sanctions will include targeting Iran\u2019s energy sector and petroleum-related transactions, as well as transactions with the Central Bank of Iran.<\/li>\n<li>Recently, U.S. also withdrew from the JCPOA, multilateral nuclear deal with Iran.<\/li>\n<li>Recently, the U.S was also responsible for a decision to \u201cgreylist\u201d Pakistan for supporting the LeT and JeM among other terror groups.<\/li>\n<li>During her recent visit to India,\u00a0\u00a0U.S. envoy Nikki Haley\u2019s asked India to \u201crevise\u201d its relationship with Iran.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ol start=\"3\">\n<li><strong><u>Iran\u2019s stand:<\/u><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ul>\n<li>Iran\u2019s deputy envoy had warned that India would face a \u201cdeprivation of all other privileges Iran has offered to India\u201d, if it chose to replace Iranian oil from other sources.<\/li>\n<li>Iran\u2019s role in supporting terror groups in West Asia would be brought up strongly, and they will highlight the U.S\u2019s support to India on fighting terror.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><u>India\u2019s status:\u00a0\u00a0<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>India appears to be caught in a tough situation vis-\u00e0-vis its relations with Iran and U.S.<\/li>\n<li>India\u2019s oil imports from the U.S. in June have doubled since last year.<\/li>\n<li>Imports from Iran declined 16% in June despite India\u2019s commitment during President Hassan Rouhani\u2019s visit in February this year.<\/li>\n<li>India is the second largest buyer of Iranian crude last year, second only to China.<\/li>\n<li>The U.S.\u00a0sanctions on Iran in order to isolate it after the Trump administration withdrew from the multilateral nuclear deal, have brought back into focus India\u2019s trade relations with the country.<\/li>\n<li>For India, its decision on procuring Iranian crude will have a cascading effect on its bilateral\u00a0relations with both Iran and the U.S.<\/li>\n<li>If it ignores U.S. pressure, it could invite sanctions of its own-powerful friend and defence partner.<\/li>\n<li>If India caves in to U.S. diplomatic pressure to cut its imports of Iranian crude to zero by\u00a0November 4, it risks its relationship with its traditional partner Iran, as well as access to important trade routes through the Chabahar port and the International North South Transport Corridor, as well as its international reputation.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In tightrope walk, India schedules talks with Iran and U.S. News: India\u2019s tough situation vis-\u00e0-vis its relations with Iran and the U.S. Important facts: Regarding Meeting Ahead of the first set of U.S. sanctions on Iran, the Indian government is planning to hold talks with Iranian and American officials.
