India’s president recently visited an island earmarked for multi-billion-dollar development. As per some experts, the project could wipe out the indigenous Shompen tribe.<\/p>\n

Description<\/strong><\/td>\nThe Shompen or Shom Pen are the indigenous<\/span> people of the interior of Great Nicobar Island<\/span>. They\u00a0are a designated as a Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Group<\/span> within the list of Scheduled Tribe.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Characteristics<\/strong><\/td>\n1) Nature<\/strong>-They are one of the most isolated<\/span> tribes on Earth.
\nMost of them are uncontacted<\/span>, refusing<\/span> all interactions with outsiders.
\n2) Livelihood<\/strong>-They are semi-nomadic hunter-gatherers<\/span>, and their main sources of livelihood are hunting, gathering, fishing, and a little bit of horticultural activities in a rudimentary form.
\n3) Food<\/strong>-They collect a wide variety of forest plants<\/span>, but their staple food is the pandanus fruit<\/span>, which they call larop<\/span>.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Population<\/strong><\/td>\nAccording to the Census (2011)<\/span>, the estimated population of Shompen is 229.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Language<\/strong><\/td>\nThey speak their own language<\/span>, which has many dialects. Members of one band do not understand the dialect of the other.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Social structure<\/strong><\/td>\n1) They have nuclear families<\/span> comprising husband, wife, and their unmarried children.
\n2) The family is controlled by the eldest male member<\/span>, who controls all activities of the women and kids.
\n3) Monogamy is generally practised, though polygamy is also permitted..<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n
