They\u00a0are a designated as a <span style=\"color: #ff0000\">Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Group<\/span> within the list of Scheduled Tribe.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"width: 15.3333%\"><strong>Characteristics<\/strong><\/td>\n<td style=\"width: 84.6667%\">1) <strong>Nature<\/strong>-They are one of the most<span style=\"color: #ff0000\"> isolated<\/span> tribes on Earth.<br \/>\nMost of them are <span style=\"color: #ff0000\">uncontacted<\/span>, <span style=\"color: #ff0000\">refusing<\/span> all interactions with outsiders.<br \/>\n2) <strong>Livelihood<\/strong>-They are <span style=\"color: #ff0000\">semi-nomadic hunter-gatherers<\/span>, and their main sources of livelihood are hunting, gathering, fishing, and a little bit of horticultural activities in a rudimentary form.<br \/>\n3) <strong>Food<\/strong>-They collect a wide variety of <span style=\"color: #ff0000\">forest plants<\/span>, but their staple food is the <span style=\"color: #ff0000\">pandanus fruit<\/span>, which they call <span style=\"color: #ff0000\">larop<\/span>.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"width: 15.3333%\"><strong>Population<\/strong><\/td>\n<td style=\"width: 84.6667%\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000\">According to the Census (2011)<\/span>, the estimated population of Shompen is 229.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"width: 15.3333%\"><strong>Language<\/strong><\/td>\n<td style=\"width: 84.6667%\">They speak their<span style=\"color: #ff0000\"> own language<\/span>, which has many dialects.
