Why in the News?<\/h2>\n

The union cabinet recently approved the incorporation of additional activities<\/span> into the National Livestock Mission.<\/p>\n

What is National Livestock Mission (NLM)?<\/h2>\n

About<\/strong><\/td>\n1.<\/strong> It is a government scheme designed to enhance both the quantity<\/span> and quality of livestock production systems<\/span>. Additionally, it seeks to improve the capabilities of all stakeholders involved.
\n2.<\/strong> The scheme was implemented as a sub scheme of White Revolution – Rashtriya Pashudhan Vikas Yojana<\/span> since April 2019.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Objective<\/strong><\/td>\nThis mission is formulated with the objective of sustainable development in the livestock sector. It<\/span><\/span> focuses on improving the availability of quality feed and fodder.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Launched<\/strong><\/td>\nIt was launched in financial year 2014-15<\/span>. It has been updated and realigned from fiscal year 2021-22<\/span>.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Nodal Ministry<\/strong><\/td>\nMinistry of Fisheries, Animal husbandry and Dairying.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Sub-Missions<\/strong><\/td>\n1. Sub-Mission on Breed improvement of Livestock and Poultry
\n2. Sub-Mission of Feed & Fodder
\n3. Sub-Mission on Innovation and Extension.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Activities<\/strong><\/td>\nThe realigned NLM comprises 10 activities<\/span> aimed at fostering entrepreneurship development, improving feed and fodder, promoting research and innovation, and enhancing livestock insurance.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n

What additional activities have been included in the National Livestock Mission?<\/h2>\n

1. Entrepreneurship in conservation of horse, donkey, mule, camel –
\na.<\/strong> Individuals, FPOs, SHGs, Joint Liability group (JLGs), Farmers Cooperative societies (FCOs), and Section 8 companies can receive a 50% capital subsidy, up to 50 lakhs<\/span>, for establishing entrepreneurship in horse, donkey, mule, and camel sectors.
\nb.<\/strong> The state government will receive assistance<\/span> for conserving horse, donkey<\/span>, and camel breeds<\/span>.<\/p>\n

2. Fodder seed processing Infrastructure- <\/strong>Entrepreneurs can establish Fodder seed processing Infrastructure with a 50% capital subsidy up to Rs. 50 lakhs. It<\/span> <\/span>covers private companies, start-ups, SHGs, FPOs, FCOs, JLGs, FCO,<\/span><\/span> and Section 8 companies<\/span>.<\/p>\n

3. Fodder cultivation- <\/strong>To expand fodder cultivation, the state government will receive assistance<\/span> for cultivating fodder in non-forest lands, wastelands, range lands, non-arable areas, and degraded forest lands.<\/p>\n

4. Livestock Insurance programme-
\na.<\/strong> The Livestock Insurance program has now been simplified, with reduction in farmers’ premium to 15%<\/span> from current rates of 20%, 30%, 40%, and 50%.
\nb.<\/strong> The premium will be shared by the Centre and the State at 60:40 for all states<\/span>, 90:10 for certain regions.<\/span>
\nc. <\/strong>The number of animals to be insured has also been increased to 10 cattle units<\/span> instead of 5 units for cattle, sheep, and goats.<\/p>\n
