Why in the news?<\/h2>\n

India\u2019s Department of Atomic Energy (DAE) has recently stared the construction phase for contributions to Proton Improvement Plan II (PIP-II) project.<\/p>\n

What is Proton Improvement Plan Project- (PIP-II)?<\/h2>\n

About<\/strong>– It is the 1st particle accelerator<\/span> on U.S. soil.<\/p>\n

Location<\/strong>– Fermilab (USA)<\/p>\n

Objective<\/strong>– To generate the world’s most intense beam of neutrinos<\/span>.<\/p>\n

International Collaborators<\/strong> \u2013 It is built with significant contributions from international partners. Indian institutions, including the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre<\/span>, the Inter-University Accelerator Centre, and others, will provide technical components<\/span> for PIP-II.<\/p>\n

Function<\/strong>– It will power<\/span> the world\u2019s most high-energy neutrino<\/span> beam to the under construction Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment<\/span> (DUNE) at Long-Baseline Neutrino Facility (LBNF).<\/p>\n

Significance<\/strong>– It provides Indian scientists<\/span> and engineers the training, technical insight<\/span> and know-how<\/span> for the development of their domestic particle accelerator<\/span> program and future projects.<\/p>\n

What are Particle Accelerators?<\/h2>\n

It is a device<\/span> that produces a beam of fast-moving<\/span>, electrically charged atomic<\/span> or subatomic particles. It\u00a0propels charged particles (Protons, Atomic Nuclei, Electrons etc.) at high speeds, close to the speed of light<\/span>.<\/p>\n

What are the application of Particle accelerators?<\/h2>\n

1) Fundamental Research<\/strong>– It enables the collision of sub-nuclear particles<\/span> at near-light speeds. This facilitates the search for new particles<\/span> and forces<\/span>, and advancing understanding of the universe\u2019s origins<\/span>.<\/p>\n

2) Health Applications<\/strong>– It is used for sterilizing medical equipment<\/span> and synthesizing radiopharmaceuticals for cancer diagnosis<\/span> and therapy.<\/p>\n

3) Environmental Impact<\/strong>– It helps in detection of trace chemical elements<\/span> in air, water, or soil. This can be used for monitoring environmental<\/span> efforts.<\/p>\n

4) Industrial Applications<\/strong>– It finds utility in improving material durability<\/span> and enhancing industrial processes<\/span> through research and development.<\/p>\n
