About:<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>a.<\/strong> Rani Chennamma was an <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Indian freedom fighter<\/span> and <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Rani of the Kittur<\/span>, a former <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">princely state in Karnataka<\/span>.<br \/>\n<strong>b. <\/strong>She <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">led the Kittur revolt of 1824<\/span>, which stands as one of the earliest woman-led anti-colonial struggles against British rule in India.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2.<\/strong> <strong>Birth<\/strong>&#8211; She was born on October 23, 1778, in Kagati, a small village in Belagavi district of Karnataka.<\/p>\n<p><strong>3. Marriage<\/strong>&#8211; She married Raja Mallasarja of Kittur at 15 and played a crucial role in defending her kingdom after his death.<\/p>\n<p><strong>4. Struggle against the British:<br \/>\na.<\/strong> She initiated a rebellion against the British in 1824 after they declined to acknowledge her adopted son as the successor according to the &#8216;<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">doctrine of lapse<\/span>&#8216;.<br \/>\n<strong>b. <\/strong>Although she was <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">initially successful<\/span>, the <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">British captured Kittur Fort in their third attempt<\/span> in December 1824, <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">resulting in Rani Chennamma&#8217;s imprisonment<\/span> and <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">eventual death in 1829<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>5. Significance<\/strong>&#8211; Her brave resistance to colonial oppression has made her a symbol in Karnataka&#8217;s political imagination and an important figure in Indian history.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>What is Doctrine of Lapse?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><strong>1.<\/strong> The doctrine of lapse was an <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">annexation policy<\/span> applied by the British East India Company in India until 1859.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2.<\/strong> Under the doctrine, the <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">ruler of an independent state died childless<\/span>, the right of ruling the State reverted or \u2018lapsed\u2019 to the sovereign.<\/p>\n<p><strong>3.<\/strong> The policy is <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">most commonly associated with Lord Dalhousie<\/span> who was the Governor General of the East India Company in India between 1848 and 1856.<\/p>\n<p><strong>4.<\/strong> However, it was not solely his invention.
