This team has achieved a breakthrough by demonstrating the laser cooling of Positronium.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>How was laser cooling of Positronium achieved?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Experimentalists achieved laser cooling of Positronium atoms initially from <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">~380 Kelvin to ~170 Kelvin<\/span>, and demonstrated the cooling in one dimension using a 70-nanosecond pulse of the <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">alexandrite-based laser system<\/span>.<br \/>\nThe lasers deployed were either in the <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">deep ultraviolet<\/span> or in the <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">infrared frequency bands<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>What is the significance of laser cooling of Positronium?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>1) <strong>Measurement of Earth\u2019s gravitational acceleration<\/strong>&#8211; This is an important precursor experiment to the formation of <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">anti-Hydrogen<\/span> and the measurement of Earth\u2019s gravitational acceleration on antihydrogen in the AEgIS experiment.<\/p>\n<p>2) <strong>Gamma-ray laser<\/strong>&#8211;\u00a0 It could open prospects to <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">produce a gamma-ray laser<\/span> that would eventually allow researchers to look inside the<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"> atomic nucleus<\/span> and have applications beyond physics.<\/p>\n<p>3) <strong>Quantum Electrodynamics (QED)<\/strong>&#8211; It will pave the way for <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">performing spectroscopic comparisons<\/span> required for the Quantum Electrodynamics (QED), the study of the light and its interaction with charged matter.<\/p>\n<p>4) <strong>\u00a0Bose\u2013Einstein condensate<\/strong>&#8211;\u00a0 It allows the production of a <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">positronium Bose\u2013Einstein condensate<\/span>, in which all constituents occupy the same quantum state.
