An international team of physicists from the Anti-hydrogen Experiment: Gravity, Interferometry, Spectroscopy (AEgIS) collaboration has recently achieved a breakthrough by demonstrating the laser cooling of Positronium<\/span>.<\/p>\n

What is AEgIS experiment?<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Antihydrogen Experiment: Gravity, Interferometry, Spectroscopy (AEgIS)<\/span> is the direct measurement of the Earth’s gravitational acceleration<\/span> on antihydrogen<\/span>.
\nAEgIS is a collaboration of physicists from a number of countries in Europe and from India. This team has achieved a breakthrough by demonstrating the laser cooling of Positronium.<\/p>\n

How was laser cooling of Positronium achieved?<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Experimentalists achieved laser cooling of Positronium atoms initially from ~380 Kelvin to ~170 Kelvin<\/span>, and demonstrated the cooling in one dimension using a 70-nanosecond pulse of the alexandrite-based laser system<\/span>.
\nThe lasers deployed were either in the deep ultraviolet<\/span> or in the infrared frequency bands<\/span><\/p>\n

What is the significance of laser cooling of Positronium?<\/strong><\/h2>\n

1) Measurement of Earth\u2019s gravitational acceleration<\/strong>– This is an important precursor experiment to the formation of anti-Hydrogen<\/span> and the measurement of Earth\u2019s gravitational acceleration on antihydrogen in the AEgIS experiment.<\/p>\n

2) Gamma-ray laser<\/strong>–\u00a0 It could open prospects to produce a gamma-ray laser<\/span> that would eventually allow researchers to look inside the atomic nucleus<\/span> and have applications beyond physics.<\/p>\n

3) Quantum Electrodynamics (QED)<\/strong>– It will pave the way for performing spectroscopic comparisons<\/span> required for the Quantum Electrodynamics (QED), the study of the light and its interaction with charged matter.<\/p>\n

4) \u00a0Bose\u2013Einstein condensate<\/strong>–\u00a0 It allows the production of a positronium Bose\u2013Einstein condensate<\/span>, in which all constituents occupy the same quantum state. It can be an incredible tool for both fundamental and applied research<\/span>.<\/p>\n
