Why in the news?<\/h2>\n

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has recently proposed a pilot study to check the feasibility of open book exams for Classes 9 to 12.<\/p>\n

Where will the pilot study be held?<\/h2>\n

The pilot will be held in select schools in November-December for subjects like English<\/span>, Mathematics<\/span> and Science<\/span> for Classes 9<\/span> and 10<\/span>, and English<\/span>, Mathematics<\/span> and Biology<\/span> for Classes 11<\/span> and 12<\/span>.<\/p>\n

What is an open book examination?<\/h2>\n

This is an examination pattern where students are allowed to refer to their books<\/span> and notes<\/span> to answer questions. The CBSE has proposed this form of assessment based on the National Curriculum Framework (NCF)<\/span><\/a> released last year.<\/p>\n

What are the types of open book examination?<\/h2>\n

There are 2 types of open book examination.
\n1) Restricted open book assessment<\/strong>– Students are allowed to refer only<\/span> the study material<\/span> approved by the exam-conducting authority.
\n2) Free type open book assessment <\/strong>– Students are allowed to bring any material<\/span> of their choice.<\/p>\n

Is this a new concept for Indian students?<\/h2>\n

Open-book exams are not a new idea<\/span>. For ex- <\/span><\/strong>In 2014, CBSE had introduced an Open Text Based Assessment (OBTA). Further, in\u00a02019<\/span>, the All India Council for Technical Education<\/span> (AICTE) allowed open book exams in engineering colleges.<\/p>\n

What is the need to introduce open book examination?<\/h2>\n

1) It ensures transitions from rote memorisation<\/span> to competency-based learning<\/span>.<\/p>\n

2) NCF SC<\/span> (National Curriculum Framework for School Education) has also recommended<\/span> that there is a need for change in assessments process.<\/p>\n

What are advantages of open book examination?<\/h2>\n

1) It can help in cultivating \u201ccritical abilities<\/span>\u201d among students.<\/p>\n

2) They have the benefit of being less stressful<\/span>.<\/p>\n

3) It can accommodate<\/span> different learning styles of students<\/span>, provide constructive feedback<\/span>, and support learning outcomes<\/span>.<\/p>\n

What are the disadvantages of open book examination?<\/h2>\n

1) There are issues related to network connectivity<\/span>.<\/p>\n

2) As per the study conducted by Nirma University, the universities do not focus on developing the skills<\/span> required for a student<\/span> to crack an Open Book Examination.<\/p>\n
