Space exploration has financial, socio-economic, and geopolitical implications. In this regard, private sector players can complement national agencies, and lead the sector by identifying market opportunities and innovating rapidly.<\/p>\n

What has India done in this regard?<\/strong><\/h2>\n

  1. State-led reforms opened India’s space sector to private companies in 2020.<\/li>\n
  2. Release of the \u2018Geospatial Guidelines\u2019<\/strong>.<\/li>\n
  3. Released of the \u2018Indian Space Policy\u2019<\/strong>, creating the Indian National Space Promotion and Authorisation Centre (IN-SPACe)<\/strong><\/a>.<\/li>\n
  4. Telecommunications Act 2023 that provided for satellite broadband services<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    What is the recent decision to improve private sector participation in space?<\/strong><\/h2>\n

    On February 21, the government took the decision to allow:<\/p>\n

      \n
    1. 100% FDI<\/strong> in the \u201cmanufacturing of components and systems\/sub-systems for satellites, ground segment and user segment\u201d.<\/li>\n
    2. Up to 74% FDI<\/strong> in satellite-manufacturing, operations, and data products.<\/li>\n
    3. Up to 49% FDI <\/strong>in launch vehicles, space ports, and their corresponding systems.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

      What will be the implications of this decision?<\/strong><\/h2>\n
        \n
      1. Raise Private Sector Participation: <\/strong>This will increase the contributions of private space flight operators, technology-developers, and application designers to the national space economy, in line with the Space Policy.<\/li>\n
      2. Ability to Compete with China: <\/strong>The decision gives India the ability to take advantage of China\u2019s strained foreign ties to catch up with China\u2019s more advanced position as a space power.<\/li>\n
      3. Investment in Indian Startups:<\/strong> Nw investments can add to India\u2019s space economy by improving start-ups\u2019 access to talent and capital, boosting local manufacturing, and improving investor confidence.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

        What should be the way forward?<\/strong><\/h2>\n

        The government must do the following:<\/p>\n

        a) Keep the regulatory environment clear.<\/p>\n

        b) Reduce red tape.<\/p>\n

        c) Increase public support.<\/p>\n

        d) Make it easy for Indian companies to access foreign markets.<\/p>\n
