Why in the news?<\/h2>\n

WHO\u2019s weekly epidemiological report has highlighted that only six cases were identified of Guinea worm disease in 2023.<\/p>\n

Description<\/strong><\/td>\nIt is an infectious \u2018Neglected tropical disease<\/span>\u2019 (NTD).<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Agent<\/strong><\/td>\nParasite \u201cDracunculus Medinensis<\/span>\u201d which is a fiery serpent.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Is it contagious?<\/strong><\/td>\nIt is basically a human disease<\/strong>. However, it can also spread to animals and humans<\/span> by eating certain aquatic animals<\/span> that might carry Guinea worm larvae, like fish or frogs.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Transmission<\/strong><\/td>\nDrinking water containing Guinea worm larvae<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Affected regions<\/strong><\/td>\nIt affects<\/span> poor communities<\/span> in remote parts of Africa<\/span> that do not have safe water to drink.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Symptoms<\/strong><\/td>\nThe disease usually has no initial<\/span> symptoms.
\nHowever, after 1 year of disease, there may be a painful burning feeling<\/span> as a blister forms, usually on the legs. The blister bursts as the worm then comes out of the skin over a few weeks.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Prevention<\/strong><\/td>\nIt can be prevented by filtering<\/span> drinking water through a piece of fine-mesh cloth, chlorination, or boiling.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Treatment<\/strong><\/td>\n1) There is no drug &\u00a0 vaccine<\/span> to prevent Guinea worm infection.
\n2) Anti-inflammatory<\/span> medicine can help reduce pain and swelling.
\n3) Antibiotic ointment<\/span> can help prevent infections.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Current status of disease<\/strong><\/td>\n1) According to the World Health Organization\u2019s (WHO) weekly epidemiological report, cases dwindled to 14 cases in 2021, 13 in 2022, and just six in 2023 from 3.5 million cases in the 1980s.
\n2) India eliminated<\/span> GWD in the 1990s,
\n3) India received GWD-free certification<\/span> from the WHO in 2000.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n

What are neglected tropical diseases?<\/h2>\n

They are diseases which occur in the tropics, usually in the low middle income countries settings.<\/span>
\nThey comprise a group of 20 conditions<\/span> mainly prevalent in tropical areas \u2014 caused by various pathogens, including viruses, bacteria, parasites, fungi and toxins<\/span>. For Ex-Leprosy, Trachoma<\/span> etc.<\/p>\n
