The blister bursts as the worm then comes out of the skin over a few weeks.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr style=\"height: 60px;\">\n<td style=\"width: 18.1212%; height: 60px;\"><strong>Prevention<\/strong><\/td>\n<td style=\"width: 81.8788%; height: 60px;\">It can be prevented by<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"> filtering<\/span> drinking water through a piece of fine-mesh cloth, chlorination, or boiling.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr style=\"height: 90px;\">\n<td style=\"width: 18.1212%; height: 90px;\"><strong>Treatment<\/strong><\/td>\n<td style=\"width: 81.8788%; height: 90px;\">1) There is no <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">drug &amp;\u00a0 vaccine<\/span> to prevent Guinea worm infection.<br \/>\n2)<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"> Anti-inflammatory<\/span> medicine can help reduce pain and swelling.<br \/>\n3) <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Antibiotic ointment<\/span> can help prevent infections.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr style=\"height: 150px;\">\n<td style=\"width: 18.1212%; height: 150px;\"><strong>Current status of disease<\/strong><\/td>\n<td style=\"width: 81.8788%; height: 150px;\">1) According to the World Health Organization\u2019s (WHO) weekly epidemiological report, cases dwindled to 14 cases in 2021, 13 in 2022, and just six in 2023 from 3.5 million cases in the 1980s.<br \/>\n2) India <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">eliminated<\/span> GWD in the 1990s,<br \/>\n3) India received<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"> GWD-free certification<\/span> from the WHO in 2000.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<h2>What are neglected tropical diseases?<\/h2>\n<p>They are diseases which occur in the tropics, usually in the <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">low middle income countries settings.<\/span><br \/>\nThey comprise a group of <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">20 conditions<\/span> mainly prevalent in tropical areas \u2014 caused by various pathogens, including<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"> viruses, bacteria, parasites, fungi and toxins<\/span>.
