Why in the news?<\/h2>\n

Conservationists from the University of Portsmouth have recently uncovered the nesting site of the “secretive” Cantor’s giant softshell turtle on the banks of the Chandragiri River in Kerala.<\/p>\n

Description<\/strong><\/td>\nIt is also known as the Asian giant softshell turtle<\/span> and the frog-faced softshell turtle.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Habitat<\/strong><\/td>\nThey inhabit inland, slow-moving, freshwater rivers, lakes, streams<\/span>, and estuaries<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Distribution<\/strong><\/td>\n\u00a0It is found in eastern and southern India<\/span>, Bangladesh<\/span>, Burma, Thailand, Malaysia, Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam, eastern and southern China.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Characteristics<\/strong><\/td>\n1) Nature<\/strong>-It is a species known for its rarity<\/span> and secretive<\/span> nature.
\n2) It spends most of its life buried<\/span> and motionless<\/span>, with only their eyes and mouth protruding from the sand.
\n3) Diet<\/strong>-These turtles are primarily carnivores<\/span> (piscivores) feeding on fish, crustaceans, and mollusks.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
