Why in the news?<\/h2>\n

The Government of India has recently approved amendments to the Electricity (Rights of Consumers) Rules, 2020.<\/p>\n

What are the major amendments?<\/h2>\n

1) Rooftop Solar Systems<\/strong>
\na) Exemption has been given for the requirement of technical feasibility study<\/span>, for systems up to a capacity of 10 kW<\/span>.
\nb) For systems of capacity higher than 10 kW, the timeline for completing the feasibility study has been reduced from 20 to15 days.<\/p>\n

2) Separate Connections for Electric Vehicle Charging Stations<\/strong>– Consumers can now obtain separate<\/span> electricity connections for charging their Electric Vehicles<\/span> (EVs).<\/p>\n

3) Fastened Process of<\/strong> New connections <\/strong>–
\nThe time period for obtaining a new electricity connection under the Rules are as such-
\nMetropolitan areas<\/span>-3 to 7 days<\/span>
\nMunicipal areas-<\/span>7 to 15 days
\nRural areas<\/span>-3 to 15 days.<\/p>\n

4) Additional Rights for Consumers in Residential Colonies and Flats<\/strong>-Owners residing in co-operative group housing societies, multi-storied buildings etc, will have the option to choose from the distribution licensee either individual connections for everyone<\/span> or a single-point connection for the whole premises.

\n5) Mandatory Additional Meter in cases of Complaints<\/strong>– If consumers raise complaints<\/span> about meter reading not aligning with their actual electricity<\/span> consumption, then the distribution licensee is required to install an additional meter<\/span> within 5 days from the date of receipt of the complaint.<\/p>\n

What is the significance of this amendment?<\/h2>\n

1) Empowerment of consumers<\/strong>– a) It will reduce timeline<\/span> for getting new electricity connections and enable consumers in multistoried flats to choose their connection type.<\/p>\n

2) Renewable energy<\/strong>– It will enhance the production of solar energy<\/span> as installing Rooftop Solar Systems gets easier and faster.<\/p>\n

3) Fulfilment of Net zero target<\/strong>– Allowing consumers to obtain separate electricity connections for charging their Electric Vehicles (EVs) will promote faster adoption<\/span> of electric vehicle. This\u00a0also aligns with the country’s goal of reducing carbon emissions<\/span> and reaching Net Zero by the year 2070.<\/p>\n
