Creation of Malware<\/strong><\/td>\nAI tools can easily create new malware that contains new zero-day vulnerabilities<\/span> or bypass detection.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Phishing Attacks<\/strong><\/td>\nAI can be used to create new<\/span>, sophisticated<\/span> and targeted<\/span> phishing attacks like intrusions<\/span> or generation of new hacking tools.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Deepfakes<\/strong><\/td>\nAI can be used to create Deepfakes that can be used to convince victims in social engineering attacks<\/span>.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

Vulnerability of critical Infrastructure-<\/strong> The vulnerability of India\u2019s critical infrastructure (power grids<\/span>, transportation systems<\/span>, and communication networks<\/span>) to AI induced cyberattacks, can disrupt essential services and endanger public safety and national security.<\/span> For ex-<\/strong> Cyberattack on Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant<\/span>.<\/p>\n

2. Threat to robust Financial system-<\/strong> Indian Financial system has large cyber presence<\/span> today with the increased use of digital payments<\/span> and online banking systems. However, AI powered malware attacks pose threats<\/span> like financial losses<\/span> and identity theft<\/span> to the robustness of financial systems in India. For ex-<\/strong> Malware attack on the City Union Bank\u2019s SWIFT system<\/span> in March 2020 leading to unauthorised transactions worth USD 2 million.<\/p>\n

3. Data Breaches and privacy concerns-<\/strong> Cyber attacks increase the risk of data breaches, where hackers access and<\/span> leak sensitive information<\/span>. These can have serious consequences for the privacy<\/span> and security of individuals<\/span> and organisations<\/span>.<\/p>\n

4. Cyber Espionage-<\/strong> India can be a target for cyber espionage activities that aim to steal confidential information and gain a strategic edge. For ex-<\/strong> Operation Side Copy<\/span>, a cyber espionage campaign targeted Indian military and diplomatic personnel with malware and<\/span> phishing emails.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Apathy towards Data privacy-<\/strong> Despite the passage of Digital Personal Data Protection Act 2023<\/a>, the private and government entities have not implemented the secured cyber systems to prevent the leak of personal data. For ex-<\/strong> The recent ban on PayTM payments bank<\/a> highlights the data privacy concerns.<\/p>\n

3. Large digital divide-<\/strong> A significant portion of the population lacks access to digital literacy and awareness. This makes them vulnerable<\/span> to phishing attacks<\/span> and online scams<\/span>.<\/p>\n

4. Skill Shortage-<\/strong> India faces a shortage of qualified cybersecurity professionals<\/span>, which hinders effective threat detection and response capabilities.<\/p>\n

Integrating AI responsibly into cybersecurity solutions can be a game-changer for India in the following ways-<\/p>\n

Threat detection and response-<\/strong> AI-powered systems can analyse network traffic<\/span>, user behaviour<\/span>, and system logs<\/span> to identify anomalies and potential threats in real-time. This will enable faster response<\/span> in times of cyberattacks and minimising damage.<\/p>\n

2. Vulnerability management-<\/strong> AI can automate vulnerability scanning and patching. This will help in ensuring that systems are constantly updated and protected from known exploits.<\/p>\n

3. Financial Fraud prevention-<\/strong> AI can analyse financial transactions and identify suspicious patterns<\/span> to prevent online fraud<\/span> and financial theft<\/span>.<\/p>\n

4. Cybercrime investigation-<\/strong> AI can assist in analysing forensic data<\/span>, identifying attackers<\/span>, and predicting future attack patterns<\/span> to improve cybercrime investigations.<\/p>\n

<\/a>What Should be the Way forward to use AI to bolster cybersecurity in India?<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n

India needs to adopt a multipronged approach to use AI as a means to bolster cybersecurity in India. The following should be the way Forward-<\/p>\n

1. Building a robust cybersecurity ecosystem-<\/strong> This must include strengthening government agencies like CERT-IN<\/span>, promoting public-private partnerships<\/span>, and fostering collaboration among stakeholders<\/span>.<\/p>\n

2. Investing in AI-powered cybersecurity solutions-<\/strong> While there are chances of misuse of AI, however, AI also holds immense potential for proactive threat detection<\/span> and response. Scaling up the investment in research and development of secure AI solutions is crucial to bolster India’s cybersecurity.<\/p>\n

3. Promotion of digital literacy and awareness-<\/strong> Educating the public about cyber hygiene<\/span>,
\nonline scams<\/span>, and data privacy practices<\/span> are essential to build a resilient digital society.<\/p>\n

4. Developing a strong legal framework-<\/strong> India needs to enact robust cybersecurity laws<\/span> and regulations to deter cybercrimes<\/span>, protect critical infrastructure and ensure data privacy.<\/p>\n

5. Investing in cybersecurity training and skills development- <\/strong>We must aim to address the skill shortage by providing training programs<\/span> for long term cybersecurity preparedness.<\/p>\n
