Why in the News?<\/strong><\/h2>\n

PM Narendra Modi recently inaugurated the Banihal-Sangaldan section of the railway line which aims to connect Baramulla in North Kashmir<\/span> to Udhampur in Jammu<\/span>. He also\u00a0flagged off Jammu and Kashmir\u2019s first electric train<\/span> from Sangaldan to Srinagar and Baramulla<\/p>\n

About Banihal-Sangaldan railway line<\/strong><\/h2>\n

1. About<\/strong>– It is the 48-kilometer-long railway line which connects Banihal in the Ramban district<\/span> to Sangaldan in the Doda district<\/span>.<\/p>\n

2.<\/strong> Part of USBRL project<\/strong>–\u00a0 It is part of the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Line (USBRL)<\/span> project.<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n

3. Features<\/strong>:
\na.<\/strong> Over 90% of this 48 km line runs through tunnels<\/span> in the hilly Ramban district.
\nb.<\/strong> It includes the country\u2019s longest 12.77-km tunnel (T-50)<\/span>. It also has 16 bridges.
\nc.<\/strong> It has three escape tunnels<\/span> for passenger safety and emergency rescues.<\/p>\n

Why it is significant?<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Alternative mode of transportation to the Valley when roads are not accessible<\/strong>:
\na.<\/strong> The train to Sangaldan offers a new travel option between Jammu and Kashmir, especially when landslides block National Highway-44<\/span> between Ramban and Banihal.
\nb.<\/strong> Travelers can cover a distance of 30-35 km by road from Ramban town to Sangaldan, from where they can catch the train to Kashmir.<\/p>\n

2. Promote tourism and economy<\/strong>– The train route also connects remote parts of Jammu division to tourists, enhancing economic activity. Hot springs are just 5 km from Sangaldan, and the scenic Gool Valley is nearby<\/span>. Limited road access has kept these areas largely unexplored.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Additional Facts:<\/strong><\/p>\n

1.<\/strong> The British constructed the first railway line<\/span> in the former princely state of Jammu and Kashmir<\/span> in 1897<\/span>.
\n2.<\/strong> It stretched over a distance of 40-45 km between Jammu and Sialkot in the plains.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n
