Why in the News?<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Researchers have identified six cases of Down syndrome<\/span> and one case of Edwards syndrome, <\/span>from prehistoric skeletal remains, dating up to approximately 5,500 years old.<\/p>\n

Findings of the research:<\/strong><\/h2>\n

a. These findings mark the first identification of Edwards syndrome from historic or prehistoric remains. Almost 10,000 genomes from ancient human skeletal<\/span> remains from Ireland, Bulgaria, Greece, Spain or Finland were identified for chromosomal diseases.<\/p>\n

b. These findings shed light on how past communities recognized these Syndromes<\/span>, and treated such conditions.<\/p>\n

Edwards Syndrome<\/strong><\/td>\n1. About the Disease-<\/strong> It is also known as trisomy 18<\/span>. It is a genetic condition<\/span> where a person is born with an extra copy of chromosome 18<\/span>. It causes physical growth delays during fetal development.
\n2. Symptoms-<\/strong> Children diagnosed with trisomy 18 have a low birth weight<\/span> and suffer from multiple birth defects<\/span>.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Down syndrome<\/strong><\/td>\n1. About the Disease-<\/strong> It is also known as trisomy 21<\/span>. It is a genetic condition<\/span> where a person is born with an extra copy of chromosome 21<\/span>.\u00a0They have a total of 47 chromosomes instead of 46 which affects the development of their brain and body.
\n2. Symptoms-<\/strong> It causes a distinct facial appearance<\/span>, intellectual disability<\/span>, and developmental delays<\/span>. However, the manifestation and severity of these symptoms can vary significantly from one individual to another.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n
