Why in the News?<\/strong><\/h2>\n

The PM recently unveiled the names of the four astronauts who will fly to low-Earth orbit as part of the Indian Space Research Organisation\u2019s (ISRO) <\/a>Gaganyaan Mission.<\/p>\n

Training of the astronauts<\/strong><\/p>\n

1.<\/strong> In June 2019, ISRO<\/span> and Glavkosmos<\/span> (a subsidiary of the Russian space agency Roscosmos) entered into a memorandum of understanding for the training of four astronauts.<\/p>\n

2.<\/strong> The four astronauts underwent training at Russia\u2019s Yuri Gagarin Cosmonaut Training Centre<\/span> from February 2020 to March 2021.<\/p>\n

What is Gaganyaan Mission?<\/strong><\/h2>\n

1. About<\/strong>\u2013 It is India\u2019s first human spaceflight program, aiming to send a crew of three humans into a 400 km orbit around Earth for a three-day mission<\/span> and safely return them to Earth.<\/p>\n

2. Launch<\/strong>\u2013 It is aimed for launch in 2024-2025.<\/p>\n

3. Launch vehicle<\/strong>: The GSLV Mk III<\/span>, also referred to as LVM-3, will serve as the launch vehicle for the Gaganyaan mission.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What is the current status of the mission?<\/strong><\/h2>\n

1. C20 Human rating completed<\/a><\/strong>–\u00a0Recently, final tests were conducted on the cryogenic engine, named CE20<\/span><\/a> of the GSLV Mk III rocket. The engine passed the test and was approved for missions carrying humans into space.<\/p>\n

2.<\/strong> The special flight engine<\/strong>\u00a0which ignites during rocket liftoff, has passed acceptance tests<\/span>. These tests ensure that the hardware performs as needed for the mission. Once certified, the technology is used in the final mission.<\/p>\n

3. The Vikas engine<\/strong> intended for the liquid stage<\/span>\u00a0have already been certified for the missions.<\/p>\n

Note-<\/strong> The crew module for the Gaganyaan-1 mission won’t include the Environment Control<\/span> and Life Support System<\/span>, responsible for maintaining an Earth-like environment inside. ISRO is currently working on testing and developing the system’s different parts in its labs.<\/p>\n
