Applicability<\/strong>-These regulations apply on a <a href=\"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/explained-what-revoking-russias-most-favoured-nation-status-means\/#What_is_the_Most_Favoured_NationMFN_Status\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Most Favored Nation (MFN)<\/span><\/a> basis.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2. Aim<\/strong>&#8211; The aim is to enhance <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">transparency<\/span> and <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">accessibility in authorization processes<\/span>, along with commitments to <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">gender equality<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>3. Significance<\/strong>&#8211; The regulations <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">address the<\/span> <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">bureaucratic hurdles in cross-border service trade<\/span>, aiming to simplify procedures and ensure equal opportunities for service providers globally.<\/p>\n<p><strong>4. Drawback-<\/strong>\u00a0However, <span style=\"color: #333333;\">only 72 out of the 164 members of the WTO are parties to the agreement<\/span>. <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">India<\/span> and South Africa were among the countries that <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">did not sign this agreement.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>What is General Agreement on Trade in Services (GATS)?<\/h2>\n<p><strong>1. About<\/strong>&#8211; It is as a treaty of the World Trade Organization (WTO).<\/p>\n<p><strong>2. Aim<\/strong>&#8211; It was made to <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">expand the multilateral trading system to services<\/span>, similar to how the <a href=\"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/gatt\/#gsc.tab=0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT)<\/a> does for goods.<\/p>\n<p><strong>3. Signed<\/strong>&#8211; It was signed at the conclusion of the <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Uruguay Round<\/span> of Multilateral Trade Negotiations and took effect on January 1, 1995.<\/p>\n<p><strong>4. Members<\/strong>&#8211; <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">All WTO countries, including India<\/span>, are also part of the GATS.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>What other events took place at the conference?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><strong>1.<\/strong> <strong>The Dialogue on Plastic Pollution and Environmentally Sustainable Plastics Trade (DPP):<br \/>\na.<\/strong> It aims to encourage WTO members to <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">decrease plastics pollution<\/span> and support environmentally sustainable plastics trade.<br \/>\n<strong>b.<\/strong> 78 members, <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">excluding India<\/span>, are involved in the Plastics Pollution Dialogue, representing 85% of global trade volume.<br \/>\n<strong>c.<\/strong> Global leaders advocated for reducing plastic trade due to its greenhouse gas emissions.<br \/>\n<strong>d.<\/strong> According to UN data, global plastic trade exceeded $1.2 trillion in 2022. The agency forecasts that <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">19% of greenhouse gas emissions will originate from plastics<\/span> by <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">2040<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2.<\/strong> <strong>Fossil fuel subsidy reform (FFSR) initiative<\/strong>: Global leaders\u00a0stressed the importance of streamlining, phasing out, or eliminating harmful fossil fuel subsidies through current or new methods.<br \/>\n<strong>a.<\/strong> The FFSR initiative <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">builds on WTO members&#8217; pledges<\/span> outlined in <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Sustainable Development Goal 12(c) of the 2030 Agenda<\/span> and <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">aligns with the Paris Agreement<\/span> on Climate Change.<br \/>\n<strong>b.<\/strong> It also supports the shift away from fossil fuels in energy systems.<br \/>\n<strong>c.<\/strong> <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">India ranked fourth <span style=\"color: #333333;\">among the top five countries<\/span> in fossil fuel subsidies<\/span>.
