Despite the recent agreement between India and Nepal, discussions over the Pancheshwar Multipurpose Project (PMP) are still deadlocked.<\/p>\n

What is Pancheshwar Multipurpose Project (PMP)?<\/h2>\n

Background<\/strong>– In February 1996, India and Nepal entered into the Mahakali Treaty<\/span>. The focal point of this treaty is the implementation of the Pancheshwar Multipurpose Project<\/span>.<\/p>\n

1. About<\/strong>– It is a bi-national hydropower project between India<\/span> and Nepal<\/span>, planned for development along the Mahakali River<\/span>, which forms the border between the two countries.<\/p>\n

2. Aim<\/strong>– Its main goals are to produce energy<\/span> and improve irrigation<\/span> in both countries.<\/p>\n

3. Features:<\/strong>
\na.<\/strong> It includes building a 315-meter tall dam<\/span> across the Mahakali River, called Sharda in India<\/span>.
\nb.<\/strong> The project aims to generate about 6,480 MW of energy<\/span>, divided equally between both sides.
\nc.<\/strong> It will also provide water for irrigating 130,000 hectares of land in Nepal<\/span> and 240,000 hectares in Indian territory.<\/span><\/p>\n

4. Concern<\/strong>– Environmentalists have raised concerns about its potential impact on regional ecology<\/span> and local communities<\/span>.<\/p>\n

What is Mahakali Treaty?<\/h2>\n

1. About:
\na.<\/strong> It is an agreement between the Governments of India and Nepal regarding the integrated development of the Mahakali River.
\nb.<\/strong> The treaty recognizes the Mahakali River as a boundary river between the two countries<\/span>.<\/p>\n

2. Signed<\/strong>– The treaty was signed in 1996<\/span>.<\/p>\n

About Mahakali river (Sharda River)<\/h2>\n

1. Origin<\/strong>– The Sharda River, also called Kali River and Mahakali River, originates from Kalapani in the Himalayas<\/span>, situated in the Pithoragarh district of Uttarakhand<\/span>.<\/p>\n

2.<\/strong>\u00a0Flow-<\/b>\u00a0The river flows along Nepal\u2019s western border with India<\/span> and joins the Ghaghara (Karnali\/Manchu) River<\/span>, which is a tributary of the Ganga.<\/p>\n

3. Tributaries<\/strong>:
\na.<\/strong> Left- Chameliya, Ramgun in Nepal
\nb.<\/strong> Right- Kuthi, Dhauli, Gori, Sarju, Ladhiya rivers in<\/span> Uttarakhand<\/span> (India)<\/span><\/p>\n
