The focal point of this treaty is the <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">implementation of the Pancheshwar Multipurpose Project<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1. About<\/strong>&#8211; It is a bi-national <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">hydropower project between India<\/span> and <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Nepal<\/span>, planned for development <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">along the Mahakali River<\/span>, which forms the border between the two countries.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2. Aim<\/strong>&#8211; Its main goals are to <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">produce energy<\/span> and <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">improve irrigation<\/span> in both countries.<\/p>\n<p><strong>3. Features:<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>a.<\/strong> It includes building a <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">315-meter tall dam<\/span> across the Mahakali River, <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">called Sharda in India<\/span>.<br \/>\n<strong>b.<\/strong> The project aims to <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">generate about 6,480 MW of energy<\/span>, divided equally between both sides.<br \/>\n<strong>c.<\/strong> It will also <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">provide water for irrigating 130,000 hectares of land in Nepal<\/span> and <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">240,000 hectares in Indian territory.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>4. Concern<\/strong>&#8211; Environmentalists have raised concerns about its <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">potential impact on regional ecology<\/span> and <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">local communities<\/span>.<\/p>\n<h2>What is Mahakali Treaty?<\/h2>\n<p><strong>1. About:<br \/>\na.<\/strong> It is an agreement between the Governments of India and Nepal regarding the integrated development of the Mahakali River.<br \/>\n<strong>b.<\/strong> The treaty <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">recognizes the Mahakali River as a boundary river between the two countries<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2. Signed<\/strong>&#8211; The treaty was signed in <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">1996<\/span>.<\/p>\n<h2>About Mahakali river (Sharda River)<\/h2>\n<p><strong>1. Origin<\/strong>&#8211; The Sharda River, also called Kali River and Mahakali River, originates from <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Kalapani in the Himalayas<\/span>, situated in the <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Pithoragarh district of Uttarakhand<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2.<\/strong>\u00a0<b>Flow-<\/b>\u00a0The river <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">flows along Nepal\u2019s western border with India<\/span> and <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">joins the Ghaghara (Karnali\/Manchu) River<\/span>, which is a tributary of the Ganga.<\/p>\n<p><strong>3.
