Why in the news?<\/h2>\n

Recently, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) started the Steadfast Defender 2024 exercise.<\/p>\n

About Steadfast Defender 2024<\/h2>\n

1) About:<\/strong><\/span> Steadfast Defender 24 is NATO’s largest military exercise<\/span> since the Cold War.<\/p>\n

2) Duration:<\/strong><\/span> It is being held from January\u00a0to\u00a0May 2024.<\/span><\/p>\n

3) Location:<\/strong><\/span> The first part of the exercise focuses on securing the Atlantic up to the Arctic and<\/span> <\/span>the second part focuses on moving troops across Europe, from the High North to Central and Eastern Europe<\/span><\/p>\n

4) Purpose:<\/strong> <\/span>Its main purpose is to highlight its collective military might and commitment<\/span> to the security of its members.<\/p>\n

5) Participants:<\/strong><\/span> It has approximately 90,000 troops from all 31 NATO Allies and Sweden as Invitee<\/span>.<\/p>\n

6) Features:<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

a) The exercise will showcase a wide range of military equipment,<\/span> with more than 50 naval vessels, from aircraft carriers to destroyers, and an air force consisting of over 80 units, including fighter jets, helicopters, and drones<\/p>\n

b) The ground forces will demonstrate NATO’s capabilities<\/span> with at least 1,100 combat vehicles, including 133 tanks and 533 infantry fighting vehicles.<\/p>\n

c) The drills are strategically designed to rehearse Nato’s execution of its regional plans. <\/span>These plans are the first of their kind in decades.<\/p>\n

d) It outlines the alliance’s response mechanisms<\/span> to potential threats, addressing concerns regarding Russian aggression.<\/p>\n

About NATO<\/h2>\n

1) About: <\/strong>North Atlantic Treaty Organization is a deterrent intergovernmental military<\/span> alliance.<\/p>\n

2) Origin: <\/strong>It was established in the aftermath of World War II<\/span> through the North Atlantic Treaty\u00a0on April 4, 1949<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

3) Members:<\/strong> It comprises of 31 member\u00a0states<\/span>, among which 29 European countries<\/span> and two North American countries<\/span>.<\/p>\n

4) Purpose:<\/strong> The primary purpose of NATO is to ensure the freedom and security<\/span> of its members by cooperating in defence<\/span> and conducting crisis-management operations<\/span>.<\/p>\n
