Activities covered<\/strong>&#8211; It comprises records of significant transactions and events within a police station, such as the <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">movement of police personnel<\/span>, the transfer of responsibilities, <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">individual arrests<\/span>, law enforcement tasks, <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">visits by senior officers<\/span>, and similar occurrences.<\/p>\n<p><strong>3. Section 44 of the Police Act, 1861:<br \/>\na.<\/strong> It mandates that <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">every officer in charge of a police station must maintain a general diary<\/span> as per the format specified by the State Government.<br \/>\n<strong>b.<\/strong> The diary should document all complaints, charges filed, names of arrested individuals, complainants, offenses charged, seized weapons or property, and the names of witnesses examined.<\/p>\n<h2>What is a First Information Report (FIR)?<\/h2>\n<p><strong>1. About<\/strong>&#8211; It is a <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">written document prepared by a police officer<\/span> <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">following information provided<\/span> <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">by a victim<\/span> or<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"> any other individual<\/span>, <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">either in written form<\/span> or <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">orally<\/span>, regarding the commission of a cognizable offense.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2. Start of investigation<\/strong>&#8211; The investigation commences <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">only after the FIR is filed<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>3.<\/strong> <strong>Mentioning under IPC and CrPC<\/strong>&#8211; The term FIR is <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">not specified in the Indian Penal Code (IPC), the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC) of 1973<\/span>, or any other legislation.\u00a0<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">However<\/span>, within police regulations or rules, information documented under <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Section 154<\/span> of the CrPC is referred to as the First Information Report (FIR).<\/p>\n<h2>What is the basic difference between FIR and General Diary (GD)?<\/h2>\n<table style=\"height: 80px; width: 100%; border-collapse: collapse; border-style: solid;\">\n<tbody>\n<tr style=\"height: 30px;\">\n<td style=\"width: 20.6061%; height: 30px;\"><strong>Aspect<\/strong><\/td>\n<td style=\"width: 38.0605%; height: 30px;\"><strong>First Information Report (FIR)<\/strong><\/td>\n<td style=\"width: 41.3333%; height: 30px;\"><strong>General Diary (GD)<\/strong><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr style=\"height: 10px;\">\n<td style=\"width: 20.6061%; height: 10px;\"><strong>Transmittal obligation<\/strong><\/td>\n<td style=\"width: 38.0605%; height: 10px;\">A copy of every FIR is forwarded to the higher-ranking officers and the relevant Judicial Magistrate.<\/td>\n<td style=\"width: 41.3333%; height: 10px;\">GD copy not sent to Magistrate; but sent to higher officer.
