Researchers in Goa have claimed to have synthesized gold nanoparticles from the Roen olmi mushroom<\/span>. It is a wild mushroom species that is widely consumed as a delicacy in the coastal state.<\/p>\n

What is Roen olmi mushroom?<\/h2>\n

1.<\/strong> About:
\na.<\/strong> It is a mushroom of the Termitomyces species<\/span>.
\nb.<\/strong> It grows on termite hills<\/span> and is called ‘roen olmi<\/span>‘ in Goa<\/span>.
\nc.<\/strong> It is a wild mushroom loved by Goans and eaten during the monsoons<\/span>.<\/p>\n

2. Association with Termites<\/strong>– These mushrooms rely solely on their association with termites for growth and cannot exist independently<\/span>.
\na.<\/strong> Termites provide mushrooms the organic material they need to grow.
\nb.<\/strong> Termites eat them to obtain enzymes<\/span> and nitrogen<\/span>.<\/p>\n

3. Habitat<\/strong>– It is found only in the Western Ghats<\/span>, where the dense forests and high humidity create perfect breeding conditions<\/p>\n

4. Significance<\/strong>– It is crucial as a strong decomposing fungus in forests and grasslands, turning 50% of dead plant material into nutrient-rich soil<\/span>.<\/p>\n

5. Concern<\/strong>– It’s over exploitation can cause outbreak of new forest diseases such as Kyasanur Forest Disease (KFD)<\/a><\/p>\n

1.<\/strong> All Termitomyces species are edible and valued for their texture, flavour, nutrients, and health benefits.<\/p>\n

2.<\/strong> They have a variety of beneficial antioxidant<\/span> and antimicrobial properties<\/span>.<\/p>\n
