Why in the News?<\/h2>\n

Recently, India has conducted the first human clinical trial of gene therapy for \u2018haemophilia A\u2019 at Christian Medical College \u2013 Vellore.<\/p>\n

What is Haemophilia A?<\/h2>\n

1. About<\/strong>– It is a genetic bleeding disorder<\/span> caused<\/span> by a deficiency in clotting factor VIII (blood-clotting protein)<\/span>, which is necessary for blood clotting.<\/p>\n

2. Sex-linked:
\na.<\/strong> It is a sex-linked disorder determined by the X and Y chromosomes. The gene for hemophilia is found on the X chromosome<\/span>.
\nb.<\/strong> Hemophilia is much more common in males<\/span> than<\/span> in females<\/span>.<\/p>\n

3. Symptoms<\/strong>– Prolonged bleeding after injuries, surgeries, or spontaneous bleeding<\/span> into muscles and joints.<\/p>\n

4. Treatment:\u00a0<\/strong>
\na.<\/strong> It includes replacement therapy<\/span>, where clotting factor concentrates are infused into the bloodstream to assist blood clotting.
\nb.<\/strong> Other treatments may involve medications to encourage clotting or surgery to mend bleeding-related damage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Most common types of Hemophilia :<\/strong>
\n1.<\/strong> Hemophilia A (Classic Hemophilia)<\/span><\/span>– This type is caused by a lack or decrease of clotting factor VIII.
\n2.<\/strong> Hemophilia B (Christmas Disease)<\/span><\/span>– This type is caused by a lack or decrease of clotting factor IX.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n

What is a Gene therapy?<\/h2>\n

1.<\/strong> Gene therapy is the introduction, removal<\/span> or change in genetic material (typically means DNA and RNA) in the cells of a patient<\/span> to treat an inherited or developed disease.<\/p>\n

2.<\/strong> Gene therapy replaces a faulty gene or adds a new gene in an attempt to cure disease or improve human body\u2019s ability to fight disease.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
