Why in the News?<\/h2>\n

Belgium, known as Europe’s cockpit<\/span>, has become the first in the European Continent<\/span> to recognise \u2018ecocide\u2019 as both a national and international crime.<\/p>\n

What is Ecocide?<\/h2>\n

1. About<\/strong>– Ecocide means significant harm<\/span> or destruction to ecosystems<\/span>, often caused by humans.<\/p>\n

2. Commonly cited examples-<\/strong> Deforestation during the Vietnam War, the destruction of the environment during the Russian invasion of Ukraine, deforestation in Indonesia<\/span> and the Amazon rainforest<\/span>, oil pollution in the Niger Delta and the Chernobyl disaster.<\/p>\n

3. Legal restriction<\/strong>– There is currently no international law<\/span> prohibiting ecocide during peacetime; however<\/span>, the Rome Statute criminalizes it<\/span>.<\/p>\n

4. The term \u2018ecocide\u2019 was popularized by Olof Palme<\/strong> when he accused the United States of ecocide at the 1972 UN Conference on the Human Environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
