Why in the News?<\/h2>\n

Prime Minster recently launched India\u2019s first indigenously developed hydrogen fuel cell ferry. It was manufactured by the Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL)<\/span> under the <\/span>Harit Nauka initiative<\/span>.<\/p>\n

What are its key features?<\/h2>\n

1. Design<\/strong>– It is a 24-meter catamaran<\/span> which can accommodate 50 people in its air-conditioned passenger area. The accommodation is made of high-quality fiberglass reinforced plastic<\/span>, resembling metro train coaches.<\/p>\n

2. Propulsion<\/strong>– This boat uses a 50-kilowatt PEM (proton-exchange membrane) fuel cell<\/span> along with<\/span> Lithium-Ion Phosphate batteries<\/span>. PEM fuel cells have the advantage of quickly adjusting their output to match power demands.<\/p>\n

3. Energy Source<\/strong>– This boat has five hydrogen cylinders<\/span> that hold 40kg of hydrogen, providing support for eight hours of operations. Additionally, the vessel is equipped with a 3-kilowatt solar panel.<\/span><\/p>\n

Note<\/strong>– A hydrogen fuel cell creates electricity using the chemical energy in hydrogen and only emits pure water, without releasing pollutants.<\/p>\n

4. Indigenous components<\/strong>– CSL developed the vessel automation system and power management system. The hydrogen fuel cell system<\/span> was developed by KPIT Technologies<\/span>, Pune, in collaboration with the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research Labs.<\/p>\n

5. Significance:<\/strong>
\na. Environment Friendly<\/strong>– It produces zero emissions<\/span> or noise<\/span>, and it is energy-efficient. It will also make urban mobility smooth and easy.
\nb. Low maintenance cost<\/strong>– Since it has no moving parts<\/span>, the ferry needs less maintenance than combustion vessels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Harit Nauka Initiative<\/strong>:<\/p>\n

1.<\/strong> In January 2024, the shipping ministry unveiled the Harit Nauka guidelines for inland vessels.<\/p>\n

2.<\/strong> According to the guidelines, all states must aim to use green fuels for 50%<\/span> of inland waterways passenger fleets within the<\/span> next decade<\/span> and 100% by 2045<\/span>.<\/p>\n

3.<\/strong> This aims to cut greenhouse gas emissions according to the Maritime Amrit Kaal Vision 2047.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n
