Specifically, in 2022, there were 159 million children and adolescents, as well as 879 million adults, who were obese.<\/p>\n<p><strong>India&#8217;s findings<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>1. Children and adolescents<\/strong>&#8211; The obesity rate for <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">girls rose from 0.1% in 1990 <span style=\"color: #333333;\">to<\/span> 3.1% in 2022<\/span>, while for boys, it increased from 0.1% to 3.9%.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Note<\/strong>&#8211; In terms of obesity rates among girls and boys, <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">India ranked 174th globally in 2022<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2. Adults<\/strong>&#8211; <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Among women<\/span>, the obesity rate surged from <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">1.2% in 1990<\/span> to <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">9.8% in 2022<\/span>, while among men, it rose from 0.5% to 5.4%.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Methodology used<\/strong>:<br \/>\n<strong>a.<\/strong> More than 1,500 researchers from 190+ countries analyzed weight and height data from over 220 million individuals aged five and older.<br \/>\n<strong>b.<\/strong> They <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">used<\/span> <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">body mass index (BMI)<\/span> to study global changes in obesity and underweight from 1990 to 2022.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Significance of the study:<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>a.<\/strong> This discovery is important given India&#8217;s existing high rates of non-communicable diseases, including heart disease, strokes, and diabetes.<br \/>\n<strong>b.<\/strong> Obesity significantly increases the risk of developing these diseases, including Type 2 diabetes in teenagers, at an early age.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Note<\/strong>&#8211; Obesity, <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">as per the World Health Organization (WHO),<\/span> refers to an excessive accumulation of fat that can be harmful to health.
