Why in the News?<\/h2>\n

The Zoological Survey of India (ZSI) has announced the discovery of a new marine species of head-shield sea slug. It has been named as Melanochlamys droupadi after the President of India, Droupadi Murmu.<\/p>\n

1. Place of Discovery<\/strong>– It was discovered from Digha of West Bengal coast<\/span> and Udaipur of Odisha coast.<\/span><\/p>\n

2. Distinct Feature<\/strong><\/span>– It is characterized by a short, blunt<\/span> and cylindrical body<\/span> and a smooth dorsal surface with two dorsal equal or unequal shield.<\/p>\n

3. Physical attributes<\/strong>:
\na.<\/strong> It’s a tiny brownish-black invertebrate<\/span>, measuring up to 7 mm long<\/span>, with a ruby red spot<\/span> at its rear.
\nb.<\/strong> It has a shell inside its body, and is a hermaphrodite<\/span> (organisms possesses both male and female reproductive organs).<\/p>\n

4. Reproduction<\/strong>– They reproduce between November<\/span> and January<\/span>.<\/p>\n

5. Habitat<\/strong>– These species are typically found along the intertidal zone<\/span>, leaving crawl marks on sandy beaches.<\/p>\n

6. Distribution<\/strong>– Species of the genus Melanochlamys are primarily found in temperate regions of the Indo-Pacific Ocean<\/span>, but three species are truly tropical<\/span>: Melanochlamys papillata from the Gulf of Thailand, Melanochlamys bengalensis from West Bengal and Odisha coasts, and the current species (Melanochlamys droupadi).<\/p>\n

2. Established<\/strong>– It was established in 1916<\/span> as a national centre for faunistic survey and exploration of the resources.<\/p>\n

3. Headquarters<\/strong>– Kolkata.<\/p>\n
