NRC breather: court pushes deadline by a month<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n

  1. The Supreme Court extended deadline for publication of final draft of the National Register of Citizens (NRC) for Assam by a month.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Important facts:<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n

    2.The deadline extended from 30 June to 30 July on account of floods in three districts in State.<\/p>\n

    3.The deadline extension was demanded because State is affected by floods.<\/p>\n

    4.The extension came after the government and state NRC coordinator agreed to adhere to the new deadline.<\/p>\n

    5.The first draft of the NRC was published in December as per the apex court directions.<\/p>\n

    6.The first draft, list of state\u2019s capital, was established where the names of 1.9 core people out of the 3.29 crore applicants were incorporated.<\/p>\n

    7.The Registrar General of India will be responsible for publication of final list to segregate Indian citizens from who illegally entered the state from Bangladesh after March 25, 1971.<\/p>\n

    8.The final NRC will count only those as Indian citizens who can prove their residency in Assam on or before 21 March, 1971.<\/p>\n

    9.Those names that do not appear in the list cease to be Assamese citizens and will be tagged as illegal immigrants of Assam.<\/p>\n

    10.Assam faced an influx of immigrants from Bangladesh.<\/p>\n

    11.The claim for such cases would be held at Foreigners Tribunal.<\/p>\n
