{"id":285689,"date":"2024-03-05T18:29:19","date_gmt":"2024-03-05T12:59:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/?p=285689"},"modified":"2024-03-05T18:29:19","modified_gmt":"2024-03-05T12:59:19","slug":"global-resource-outlook-2024","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/global-resource-outlook-2024\/","title":{"rendered":"Global Resource Outlook 2024"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Source<\/strong>-This post on <strong><span style=\"color: #333333;\">Global Resource Outlook 2024<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0is based on the article <strong>\u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.downtoearth.org.in\/news\/environment\/unea-6-extraction-use-of-world-s-resources-has-grown-three-times-more-in-50-years-94766\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">UNEA-6: Extraction &amp; use of world\u2019s resources has grown three times more in 50 years<\/a><\/strong>\u201d published in <strong>\u201cDown to Earth\u201d <\/strong>on 1st March 2024.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Why in the News?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\">Recently, the <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Global Resource Outlook 2024<\/span> report has been published by <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">UNEP<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Key findings of the report<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>1. <strong>Production and consumption of resources:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>i) The consumption and use of resources is largely driven by demand in <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">upper income countries.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>ii) Global production and consumption of material resources has <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">grown more than three times<\/span> over the last 50 year.<\/p>\n<p>2. <strong>Extraction and processing of material resources<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>i) The extraction and processing of material resources <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">accounts for over 55 per cent of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions<\/span> and <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">40 per cent of particulate matter<\/span> poisoning the environment.<\/p>\n<p>ii) The extraction and processing of agricultural crops and forestry products accounts for <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">90 per cent of land-related biodiversity loss<\/span> and water stress and a <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">one- third of GHG emissions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>iii) The extraction and processing of fossil fuels, metals and non-metallic minerals including sand, gravel and clay account for <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">35 per cent of global emissions.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>3. The report predicts that <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">resource exploitation could increase<\/span> by almost 60 per cent from 2020 levels by 2060 from 100 to 160 billion tonnes.<\/p>\n<p>4. The report shows <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">global inequality<\/span> where low-income countries consume six times lesser materials compared to wealthy nations.<\/p>\n<p>5.
