What is the News?<\/b><\/h2>\n

Recently, Tripura\u2019s traditional tribal attire \u2018Risa\u2019<\/strong> got GI tag.<\/p>\n

About Risa\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n

1. About Risa:<\/strong> It is a traditionally handwoven cloth<\/span> used as a female upper garment, and also as headgear, a stole, or a present to express respect.<\/p>\n

2. Origin of the attire: <\/strong>The Tripuri attire is believed to have existed before the rule of the Manikya kings, who reigned over Tripura for over 500 years from the 15th century.<\/p>\n

3. Risa is common in almost all 19 indigenous tribal communities of Tripura.<\/span> Each community has its own design. The traditional Tripuri female attire consists of three parts \u2014 risa<\/span>, rignai<\/span> and rikutu<\/span>.<\/p>\n

4.\u00a0Rignai is primarily worn as the lower garment and literally means \u2018to wear\u2019. It is an indigenous variety of the sari of mainland India.<\/p>\n

5.\u00a0Rituku\u00a0is mainly used as a wrap, or like a \u2018chunri\u2019 or a \u2018pallu\u2019 of the Indian saree. It is also used to cover the heads of newly married Tripuri women.<\/p>\n

7. Significance:<\/strong> It hold scrucial social, cultural and religious significance<\/span> in Tripura:<\/p>\n

i) Social Significance:<\/strong> Risa has a crucial social and religious significance as adolescent Tripuri girls are first given a risa to wear in an event called Risa Sormani, at age 12 to 14.<\/p>\n

ii) Religious significance:<\/strong>\u00a0The risa is used in religious festivals<\/span> such as Garia Puja by tribal communities, a turban by men during weddings and festivals, a cummerbund over the dhoti.<\/p>\n

iii) It is also used as a headscarf by young girls and boys<\/span>, and as a muffler during winters. The cloth is also used as a makeshift hanger<\/span> to hold an infant on mothers\u2019 backs.<\/p>\n

iv) It is presented as a mark of honour to distinguished recipients.<\/span><\/p>\n
