Function<\/strong><\/td>\n1.<\/strong> MethaneSAT will make 15 orbits around the Earth each day<\/span>, observing the activities of the oil and gas industry.
\n2.<\/strong> It will generate extensive data<\/span> to indicate “where methane originates<\/span>, who is accountable<\/span>, and whether emissions are increasing<\/span> or decreasing over time<\/span>.”
\n3.<\/strong> The data collected by MethaneSAT will be freely available to the public in almost real-time.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Features<\/strong><\/td>\n1.<\/strong> The satellite, equipped with a high-resolution infrared sensor<\/span> and a spectrometer<\/span>, which will help fill important data gaps.
\n2.<\/strong> It can detect changes in methane levels as small as three parts per billion in the atmosphere<\/span>, allowing it to identify smaller sources of emissions compared to previous satellites.
\n3.<\/strong> MethaneSAT also boasts a broad camera perspective, covering approximately 200 km by 200 km, enabling it to detect larger emitters known as “super emitters<\/span>“.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Data Analysis<\/strong><\/td>\nThe data collected will be analyzed using cloud computing and AI technology developed by Google<\/span>, which is a mission partner<\/span>. This data will be publicly accessible through Google’s Earth Engine platform.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n

Why is it significant?<\/strong><\/h2>\n

1.<\/strong> The launch of MethaneSAT coincides with a time when the world is adopting stricter methane management policies.<\/p>\n

2.<\/strong> Over 150 countries signed the Global Methane Pledge<\/span><\/a> in 2021, aiming to reduce their combined methane emissions by at least 30% from 2020 levels<\/span> by 2030<\/span>.<\/p>\n

3.<\/strong> Additionally, at COP 28<\/span><\/a>, more than 50 companies pledged to significantly reduce methane emissions and routine flaring. MethaneSAT will support these efforts by assisting in achieving these targets<\/span>.<\/p>\n
