{"id":28590,"date":"2018-10-24T13:20:12","date_gmt":"2018-10-24T07:50:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.forumias.com\/?p=28590"},"modified":"2018-10-24T13:20:12","modified_gmt":"2018-10-24T07:50:12","slug":"is-biodiversity-treaty-a-hurdle-to-conservation-research","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/is-biodiversity-treaty-a-hurdle-to-conservation-research\/","title":{"rendered":"Is biodiversity treaty a hurdle to conservation research?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thehindu.com\/todays-paper\/tp-life\/is-biodiversity-treaty-a-hurdle-to-conservation-research\/article24284216.ece?utm_source=tp-life&amp;utm_medium=sticky_footer\">Is biodiversity treaty a hurdle to conservation research?<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong><u>News:<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>According to Scientists, the Convention on Biological Diversity(CBD), of which India is signatory too, is hindering biodiversity research and preventing international collaborations.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong><u>Important facts:<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<ol start=\"2\">\n<li>This was revealed by scientists\u00a0 in a communication published on June 28 in the journal Science, an international team of scientists-including professors at India\u2019s Kerala Agricultural University and Ashoka Trust for Research in Ecology and the Environment (ATREE).<\/li>\n<li>172 scientists from 35 countries have expressed support to a critique of the CBD.<\/li>\n<li>The CBD\u00a0 is aimed at conserving biological diversity, sustainably using biological components and fair and equitable sharing of benefits that may arise out of the utilization of genetic resources.<\/li>\n<li>The latter was delineated in the Nagoya Protocol, which came into effect in 2014.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Seed Treaty:<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ul>\n<li>International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture or the \u201cSeed Treaty\u201d, could be used as a model of exchange of biological materials for non-commercial research.<\/li>\n<li>Seed treaty ensures worldwide public accessibility of genetic resources of essential food and fodder.<\/li>\n<li>Another solution may be to add an explicit treaty or annex in the CBD to promote and facilitate biodiversity research, conservation and international collaborations.<\/li>\n<li>Under government-approved international collaborative projects, material can be exchanged freely.<\/li>\n<li>There are also \u201cfacilitative processes\u201d to send specimens for taxonomic identification to other countries.<\/li>\n<li>India is one of the 196 countries that has committed to the CBD and ratified it in February 1994.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>CBD:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The\u00a0Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) , also known as Biodiversity Convention, is a multilateral treaty.<\/li>\n<li>The Convention has three main goals including:<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>a. The conservation of biological diversity<\/p>\n<p>b. Sustainable use of its components<\/p>\n<p>c. The fair and equitable sharing of benefits arising from genetic resources.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The Convention was opened for signature at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro on 5 June 1991 and entered into force on 29 December 1993.<\/li>\n<li>At the 2010, 10<sup>th<\/sup> Conference of Parties (COP) to the Convention on Biological Diversity in October in Nagoya, Japan, the Nagoya Protocol was adopted<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Is biodiversity treaty a hurdle to conservation research?
