Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently inaugurated India’s first underwater metro line in Kolkata.<\/p>\n

1. About<\/strong>– This underwater Metro line is a part of the Howrah Maidan-Esplanade section<\/span> of Kolkata Metro\u2019s East-West corridor<\/span>.<\/p>\n

2.<\/strong> Length of the section<\/strong>– Howrah Maidan-Esplanade\u00a0section is 4.8 km long and goes under the Hooghly River<\/span> through India’s first underwater transportation tunnel<\/span>.<\/p>\n

3. Tunnel specification<\/strong>-The tunnel is 13 meters below the riverbed and 33 meters below ground level<\/span>. Its total length is 520 meters<\/span>.<\/p>\n

4. Connecting Places<\/strong>– This section connects Kolkata<\/span> and Howrah<\/span>, located on the east and west banks of the Hooghly River, respectively.<\/p>\n

5. Deepest metro Station<\/strong>-This section will also have the distinction of having the deepest metro station in India at Howrah, which is 30 meters deep.<\/p>\n

History of Kolkata Metro<\/h2>\n

1. About<\/strong>-It is India’s first rapid transit system<\/span>, serving Kolkata and the wider Kolkata Metropolitan Region in West Bengal.<\/p>\n

2. Started & Current Status<\/strong>– It was first operationalized in 1984<\/span>. As of January 2023, it is the second busiest<\/span> and fourth longest metro network<\/span> in India.<\/p>\n

1. About<\/strong>– The Hooghly River, also called the Bhagirathi-Hoogly<\/span> and Kati-Ganga River<\/span>, is a major river in West Bengal.<\/p>\n

2. Length<\/strong>– It is a branch of the Ganges River<\/span>, spanning approximately 260 kilometers<\/span>.<\/p>\n

3. Course:<\/strong>
\na.<\/strong> It originates in Murshidabad<\/span>, where the Ganga River divides into two branches.
\nb.<\/strong> The branch that flows through Bangladesh is known as the Padma<\/span>, while the other branch, the Hooghly, flows through a densely industrialized region of West Bengal.<\/p>\n

4. Rivers drain into Hooghly<\/strong>– Ajay, Falgu, Jalangi and Churni to the north and Rupnarayan, Mayurakshi, Damodar and Haldi to the south.<\/p>\n
