Neo-Vaishnavite tradition was introduced by the 15th-16th century reformer saint Srimanta Sankardeva.<\/p>\n<p>2)<strong> Characterstics:\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>i) The masks can <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">depict gods, goddesses, demons, animals and birds.<\/span>\u00a0Ravana, Garuda, Narasimha, Hanuman, Varaha Surpanakha all feature among the masks.<\/p>\n<p>iii) <strong>Sizes:<\/strong><br \/>\n(a) <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Mukh mukha:<\/span> They cover just the face, and it is made in around five days.<br \/>\n(b) <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Cho mukha:<\/span> They cover the whole head and body of the performer and takes up to one-and-a-half months to be made.<\/p>\n<p>iii) Material used: The masks are made of <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">bamboo, clay, dung, cloth, cotton, wood and other materials available in the riverine<\/span> surroundings of their makers.<\/p>\n<p>3. Traditional practitioners are working to take the art out of their traditional place in sattras, or monasteries, and give them a new, contemporary life.<\/p>\n<h2>About Sattras<\/h2>\n<p><strong>1.<\/strong>\u00a0Sattras are <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">monastic institutions\u00a0<\/span>established by<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"> Srimanta Sankardev<\/span> and his disciples as centres of religious, social and cultural reform.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2.<\/strong> Presently, Sattras\u00a0are <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">also centres of traditional performing arts<\/span> such as borgeet (songs), <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">xattriya (dance)<\/span> and bhaona (theatre), which are an integral part of the Sankardev tradition.<\/p>\n<p><strong>3.<\/strong> <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Majuli has 22 sattras,<\/span> and the patent application states that the <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">mask-making tradition is by and large concentrated in four of them<\/span> \u2014 Samaguri Sattra, Natun Samaguri Sattra, Bihimpur Sattra and Alengi Narasimha Sattra.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>About Majuli manuscript painting<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>1. It is a <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">form of painting<\/span> originated in the <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">16th century. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>2. It is done on<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"> sanchi pat, or manuscripts<\/span> made of the bark of the sanchi or agar tree, using homemade ink.<\/p>\n<p>3. The earliest example of an illustrated manuscript is said to be a rendering of the<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"> Adya Dasama of the Bhagwat Purana<\/span> in Assamese by <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Srimanta Sankardev. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>4. This art was patronised by the <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Ahom kings<\/span>.
