{"id":28649,"date":"2018-10-24T14:11:24","date_gmt":"2018-10-24T08:41:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.forumias.com\/?p=28649"},"modified":"2018-10-24T14:11:24","modified_gmt":"2018-10-24T08:41:24","slug":"an-unequal-platter","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/an-unequal-platter\/","title":{"rendered":"An unequal platter"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thehindu.com\/opinion\/op-ed\/an-unequal-platter\/article24256008.ece\">An unequal platter<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong><u>Article:<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Soumitra Ghosh, Tata Institute of Social Science, discusses how Maharashtra is a classic case of a lack of development with high level of malnutrition among children.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-1572 \" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/currentaffairs.forumias.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/stunning-image-2.jpg?resize=448%2C262\" alt=\"\" width=\"448\" height=\"262\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong><u>Important Analysis:<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Maharashtra being India\u2019s richest state, is suffering from high level of malnutrition among children in the tribal belts.<\/li>\n<li>Despite states per capita income has doubled since 2004, its nutritional status has not made commensurate progress.<\/li>\n<li>The <strong>National Family Health Survey(NFHS)<\/strong> 2015-16 and 2005-06, highlighted the following pointers:<\/li>\n<li>Though stunting has declined from 46.3% to 34.4%, wasting rates have increased from 16.5% to 25.6%.<\/li>\n<li>Underweight rate (36%), has remained static in the last decade.<\/li>\n<li>This is worse than in some of the poor countries like Bangladesh(33%), Afghanistan (25%) , or Mozambique(15%).<\/li>\n<li>Every second tribal child suffers from growth restricting malnutrition due to chronic danger.<\/li>\n<li>In 2005, child malnutrition claimed 718 lives in Maharashtra\u2019s Palghar District.<\/li>\n<li>Even after a decade of double digit economic growth (2004-05 to 2014-15), Palghar\u2019s malnutrition status has barely improved.<\/li>\n<li>In September 2016, the National Human Rights Commission issued notice to Maharashtra government over reports of 600 children dying due to malnutrition in Palghar.<\/li>\n<li>On this, the State government promised to implement schemes like Jaccha Baccha and Integrated Child Development Services to check malnutrition.<\/li>\n<li>Even independent survey conducted in Vikramgad block of the district found that 57%, 21%, and 53% of children were stunted, wasted, and underweight respectively.<\/li>\n<li>It is generally believed that recovery from growth retardation is only possible if the affected child put on nutrient requirement diet.<\/li>\n<li>Nutrient adequacy is calculated by difference grouping of food which includes:- cereals, roots and tubers; legumes and nuts; dairy products; flesh foods; eggs; fish; dark green leafy vegetables; and other fruits and vegetables<\/li>\n<li>26% and 57% of the children (83% put together) had food from only two\/three of the eight food groups.<\/li>\n<li>While, only 17% of the children achieved a minimum level of diet diversity \u2014 they received four or more of the eight food groups.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<table>\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"638\"><strong><u>What is stunting?<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u00a0 India has the highest number of stunted children worldwide.<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0Stunting is a serious form of malnutrition or chronic undernutrition during the most critical periods of growth and development of children.<\/li>\n<li>It is characterised by low height for age and is caused mainly due to insufficient nutritional intake often triggered by recurrent infections such as diarrhoea.<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0Stunting is caused by an insufficient intake of macro- and micro-nutrients.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p><strong><u>17. Reasons for food insecurity in Maharashtra:<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Acute food insecurity in tribal households is due to loss of their traditional dependence on forest livelihood.<\/li>\n<li>State\u2019s deepening agrarian crisis.<\/li>\n<li>Weakening of public nutrition programmes.<\/li>\n<li>State\u2019s Budget on nutrition expenditure has drastically decline from 1.68% in 2012-13 to 0.94% in 2018-19.<\/li>\n<li>Nutritional schemes not having desired results.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><u>18.
