Why in the news?<\/h2>\n

The Blue Leaders High-Level Event on Biodiversity Beyond National Jurisdiction was held in Belgium on March 7, 2024.<\/p>\n

About Blue Leaders<\/h2>\n

1. About:<\/strong> It is an alliance<\/span> of countries<\/span> calling for urgent action<\/span><\/span>\u00a0to save the global ocean in the face of the climate crisis, overfishing, pollution, and other threats.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

2. Members:<\/strong> There are 24 member countries<\/span> of blue Leaders.\u00a0Belgium, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Germany, Italy, Netherlands, Spain are some of the key members of this alliance.<\/p>\n

Note:<\/strong> India is not the member of this alliance.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

3. Goals:<\/strong> The Blue Leaders are committed to two major goals:\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u200ba) <\/span><\/span>Securing a new international target<\/span> to protect at least 30% of the global ocean through a network of highly and fully protected marine areas by 2030.\u200b\u200b<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

b) <\/span><\/span>The rapid and successful conclusion of a new High Seas Treaty<\/span> that provides for establishment of fully and highly protected<\/span> marine areas in the high seas and strengthens management of human activities outside protected areas.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

4. What does “highly”<\/span> and “fully” protected<\/span> actually mean:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

a) Highly protected\u00a0<\/span>means only light extractive activities, such as subsistence or small-scale fishing with minimal impact, are allowed. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

b) Fully protected<\/span>\u00a0means that no extractive or destructive activities are allowed.<\/span><\/p>\n
