Military Stations are purely meant for the use and accommodation of the armed forces, and these are established under an executive order.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2. History:<\/strong> a) They originated during the <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">colonial era<\/span><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">\u00a0as military stations<\/span> to maintain control and safeguard their territorial interests.<\/p>\n<p>b) These towns were<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"> reserved exclusively for military personnel<\/span> and were administered separately from civilian areas.<\/p>\n<p><strong>3. Types of cantonments:<\/strong> It is categorized into <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">four categories<span style=\"color: #333333;\"> based<\/span><\/span>\u00a0on the size of the population residing inside a Cantonment:<\/p>\n<p><strong>i) Category I:<\/strong> Having a population of more than 50,000.<br \/>\n<strong>ii) Category II:<\/strong> Having a population of 10,000 to 50,000.<br \/>\n<strong>iii) Category III:<\/strong> Having a population of less than 10,000.<br \/>\n<strong>iv) Category IV:<\/strong> Industrial or training Cantonments, irrespective of their population size.<\/p>\n<p><strong>4. Administration: <\/strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Entry 3 of the Union List (Schedule VII) of the Constitution<\/span> of India states that urban self-governance in cantonments and housing accommodations within them falls under the jurisdiction of the Union of India.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">a) Directorate General Defence Estate<\/span> is an <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Inter Services Organisation of the Ministry of Defence<\/span> which directly controls the Cantonment Administration.<\/p>\n<p>b) There are <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">more than 60 Cantonments in the country<\/span> which have been notified<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"> under the Cantonments Act, 1924<\/span> (succeeded by the<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"> Cantonments Act, 2006<\/span>).<\/p>\n<p>c) <a href=\"https:\/\/factly.forumias.com\/cantonment-board\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Cantonment Boards<\/strong>:<\/a><br \/>\ni) It was established under the provisions of the<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"> Cantonments Act of 2006. <\/span>Cantonment Boards consists of <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">eight members<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>ii) The services provided by these boards include sanitation, primary education, street lighting, water supply, and maintenance of roads, bridges, and public hospitals.<\/p>\n<p><strong>UPSC Syllabus: Polity and nation<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Source-This post on denotification of cantonments\u00a0has been created based on the article \u201cDefence Ministry denotifies civil areas of 10 cantonments\u201d published in \u201cThe Indian Express\u201d on 7 March 2024.
