Why in the News?<\/h2>\n

India recently conducted a test of the Agni-V ballistic missile<\/span> with MIRV technology<\/span>. The test was carried out by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO)<\/a> as part of Mission Divyastra.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Mission Divyastra<\/strong><\/p>\n

Mission Divyastra is the first test flight of India’s indigenously developed Agni-5 missile with MIRV technology, led by the DRDO.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n

What are Agni missiles?<\/h2>\n

About<\/strong>– Agni missiles are long-range ballistic missiles<\/span> designed for surface-to-surface attacks<\/span> and capable of carrying nuclear payloads<\/span>.<\/p>\n

First Variant<\/strong>-The first missile in the series, Agni-I, was developed as part of the Integrated Guided Missile Development Programme (IGMDP)<\/a> and tested in 1989.<\/p>\n

Designated as a special Program<\/strong>:
\na.<\/strong> After its success, the Agni missile program became independent from the IGMDP due to its strategic significance.
\nb.<\/strong> It was designated as a special program in India’s defense budget and received sufficient funds for further development.<\/p>\n

About<\/strong>– Agni-V is India’s intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM)<\/span>, developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO).<\/p>\n

Range<\/strong>– The range of Agni-V extends beyond 5,000 kilometers\u00a0<\/span>and can reach most parts of China.<\/p>\n

Propulsion<\/strong>– It’s a three-stage missile<\/span> powered by solid fuel<\/span>. Using composite motor casing in the second and third stages makes it lighter, improving both its range and payload capacity.<\/p>\n

Latest variant with MIRV tech<\/strong>– The missile latest variant features MIRV technology<\/span>, which was developed over five decades ago and is possessed by only a few countries.<\/p>\n

What is MIRV technology?<\/h2>\n

Full form<\/strong>– MIRV stands for Multiple Independently Targetable Re-entry Vehicle<\/span>.<\/p>\n

About<\/strong>– It is a missile technology that enables one missile to carry multiple nuclear warheads<\/span>, each capable of hitting different targets<\/span>.<\/p>\n

Other Countries equipped with this technology<\/strong>– Currently, the United States<\/span>, Russia<\/span>, China<\/span>, France<\/span>, and the United Kingdom<\/span> possess MIRV-equipped missiles. These missiles can be launched from either land-based platforms or submarines at sea.<\/p>\n
