Why in the News?<\/h2>\n

Union Health Ministry recently launched the National Action Plan for Prevention and Control of Snakebite Envenoming (NAPSE) in India.<\/p>\n

Vision<\/strong>– To reduce snakebite deaths by half by 2030.<\/p>\n

Mission<\/strong>– To gradually decrease the sickness, death, and related issues in humans caused by snakebites.<\/p>\n

Key Features of NAPSE<\/strong><\/p>\n

1. Guide for States:
\na.<\/strong> It is a guidance document\u00a0for states to formulate their individual action plans for managing, preventing, and controlling snakebites using the ‘One Health<\/span>‘ approach.
\nb.<\/strong> It aims to systematically reduce the risk of snakebite poisoning<\/span> by ensuring continuous access to anti-snake venom, building capacity, establishing referral systems, and educating the public.<\/p>\n

2. Role of stakeholders: <\/strong>The NAPSE has selected key stakeholders, supporting stakeholders, and other institutes based on their roles and responsibilities.<\/p>\n

a. key stakeholders- <\/strong>They will oversee the implementation of activities outlined in the National<\/span> and State Action Plans for Snakebite Prevention and Control<\/span><\/span>, offering technical and logistical support at all levels. Additionally, they will assist in formalizing State Action Plans<\/span>.<\/p>\n

b. Supporting stakeholders<\/strong> will help key stakeholders coordinate<\/span> and implement various parts of the NAPSE<\/span>. They will offer technical support for activities aimed at preventing and controlling snakebite poisoning in India across different areas.<\/p>\n

c. Other stakeholders or institutes <\/strong>will include NGOs<\/span> in health, wildlife, and veterinary sectors, along with professional associations and international development organizations. They will assist in NAPSE implementation, providing resources and expertise to support stakeholders at the grassroots level.<\/p>\n

Snakebite Helpline number:<\/strong>
\na.<\/strong> A Snakebite Helpline number (15400)<\/span> will be tested in five states<\/span> (Puducherry, Madhya Pradesh, Assam, Andhra Pradesh, and Delhi).
\nb.<\/strong> This service will offer quick help, advice, and support to people and communities affected by snakebites, aiming to ensure swift access to medical care and information for the public.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Do you know?<\/strong><\/p>\n

1.<\/strong> In India, about 50,000 deaths happen from an estimated 3-4 million snakebites yearly, making up half of all snakebite deaths worldwide<\/span>.<\/p>\n

2.<\/strong> In India, about 90% of snakebites are from the ‘big four’ snakes<\/span>: common krait, Indian cobra, Russell’s viper, and saw-scaled viper.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n
