This represents a <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">slight increase compared to 2022.<br \/>\n<\/span><strong>b.<\/strong> Out of the 120 Mt of methane released into the atmosphere, approximately <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">80 million tons came from only 10 countries<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2. Top emitters<\/strong>&#8211; The <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">United States tops the list<\/span> in methane emissions from oil and gas operations, with <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Russia following closely<\/span>. Meanwhile, <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">China leads in emissions from coal operations.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>3.<\/strong> <strong>Additional emission<\/strong>&#8211; Bioenergy, produced from plant and animal waste, resulted in an additional 10 million tons of emissions.<\/p>\n<p><strong>4. Emission Trends<\/strong>&#8211; Although studies indicate that emissions are declining in certain areas, the overall emissions remain excessively high to achieve the world&#8217;s climate objectives.<\/p>\n<p><strong>5. Actions needed:<br \/>\na. <\/strong>The world <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">must reduce methane emissions from fossil fuels by 75% by 2030<\/span> to meet the Paris Agreement target of limiting warming to 1.5\u00b0C.<br \/>\n<strong>b.<\/strong> The IEA estimated that <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">this goal would require about $170 billion in spending<\/span>. This is less than 5 percent of the income generated by the fossil fuel industry in 2023.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Note-<\/strong> <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Methane contributes to about 30% <span style=\"color: #333333;\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">of the global temperature<\/span> <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">increase since the preindustrial era<\/span><\/span><\/span>.
