Why in the News?<\/h2>\n

The Food and Agriculture Organization<\/a> (FAO) of the United Nations and the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR)<\/a> released surveillance data of the Indian Network for Fishery and Animal Antimicrobial Resistance (INFAAR) for 2019-22.<\/p>\n

INFAAR 2019-22 Report<\/span> is the first national report on AMR surveillance<\/span>\u00a0in India’s fisheries and livestock sectors.<\/p>\n

What is Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR)?<\/h2>\n

Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) is the resistance of microorganisms<\/span> (bacteria, virus, parasites and fungi) to an antimicrobial agent<\/span> (antibiotics, fungicides, antiviral agents and parasiticides), to which they were first sensitive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

About INFAAR (Indian Network for Fishery and Animal Antimicrobial Resistance)<\/strong><\/p>\n

1.<\/strong> INFAAR is a laboratory network established by ICAR<\/span>.<\/p>\n

2.<\/strong> It receives technical assistance from the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO)<\/span> and the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).<\/p>\n

3.<\/strong> It is dedicated to conducting AMR surveillance in the fisheries<\/span> and livestock sectors<\/span>.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n

What are the key findings of the report?<\/h2>\n

Data collection<\/strong>:
\na.<\/strong> The (INFAAR) collected data from 2019-2022, covering 3 aquaculture systems (freshwater, brackish-water and marine)<\/span> and major food-producing animals<\/span>.
\nb.<\/strong> Resistance was profiled for Staphylococcus aureus, coagulase-negative Staphylococcus species (CONS), Escherichia coli, Aeromonas species Vibrio parahaemolyticus and Vibrio sp.<\/p>\n

1. Resistance pattern in fisheries sector:
\na.<\/strong> Isolates of Staphylococcus aureus<\/span> exhibited high resistance against penicillin across all systems.
\nb.<\/strong> Freshwater fish displayed<\/span> significant resistance to ciprofloxacin<\/span> (54.8%), while marine samples showed higher resistance to cefotaxime<\/span> (54.1%).
\nc.<\/strong> Significant resistance was also observed in shrimp samples against ampicillin.<\/p>\n

2. Resistance pattern in livestock sector:
\na.<\/strong> E. coli and Staphylococcus isolates from various livestock were tested for antimicrobial resistance profiles. Increased resistance, especially in E. coli and Staphylococci, was noted in the livestock sector<\/span>.
\nb.<\/strong> Isolates from poultry showed higher resistance rates to various antibiotics compared to those from other food animals.<\/p>\n
