Why in the News?<\/h2>\n

Recently, a petition has been filed in the Supreme Court seeking relief from demarcating Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary and removing encroachments.<\/p>\n

Status<\/strong><\/td>\nIt attained the status of a wildlife Sanctury in 1987.<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Special Feature<\/strong><\/td>\n1. It is known for holding the highest density of Greater One Horned Rhinoceros<\/span> in the country.
\n2. Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary also known as “Mini Kaziranga”<\/span> due to its comparable landscape and notable population of the one-horned rhinoceros.

Vegetation<\/strong><\/td>\nIt has grassland vegetation<\/span> consists of at least 15 grass species.<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Flora<\/strong><\/td>\nPabitora Wildlife sanctury comprised of wet savannah, featuring a variety of vegetation such as Arundo donax, Erianthus ravennae, Phragmites karka, Imperata cylindrica, and Saccharum spp.<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Fauna<\/strong><\/td>\n1. The wildlife sanctuary is home to endangered one-horned rhinoceros and the other mammals such as Leopard, Leopard cat, Fishing cat, Jungle cat, Feral Buffalo, Wild pigs, Chinese pangolins,<\/span> etc.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n

About One Horned Rhinoceros<\/span><\/h2>\n

1. The Greater One-Horned Rhino is the largest\u00a0<\/span>among the rhino species, characterized by a\u00a0single black horn<\/span>\u00a0and a\u00a0grey-brown hide with skin folds.<\/span><\/p>\n

2. They primarily graze, consuming grasses, leaves, branches of shrubs and trees, fruits, and aquatic plants.<\/p>\n

3. Assam hosts an estimated\u00a02,640 rhinos<\/span>\u00a0across four protected areas:\u00a0Pabitora Wildlife Reserve,\u00a0Rajiv Gandhi Orang National Park<\/a>,\u00a0Kaziranga National Park<\/a>,<\/span> and\u00a0Manas National Park<\/a>.<\/span> Approximately\u00a02,400\u00a0<\/span>of them reside in the\u00a0Kaziranga National Park and Tiger Reserve (KNPTR).<\/span><\/p>\n
