of Mumbai<\/span> (previously Bombay) and was <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">recognized as a social reformer<\/span>, <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">educator<\/span>, and <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">philanthropist.<\/span><br \/>\n<strong>b.<\/strong> He provided invaluable contributions, both ideologically and financially, across numerous sectors, establishing a robust foundation for the city.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Birth<\/strong>&#8211; He was born (February 10, 1803) in a wealthy Brahmin family in Murbad,<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Thane district ,Maharashtra<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Inspired by<\/strong>&#8211; He was deeply influenced by the renowned merchant and philanthropist <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Sir Jamsetjee Jeejeebhoy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Political journey<\/strong>&#8211; He was the <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">first Indian to be appointed to the Legislative Council of Bombay.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>What are Shankarseth&#8217;s main contributions?<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Education:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>1.<\/strong> Shankarseth was dedicated to expanding education in Bombay and donated his family&#8217;s land for educational purposes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2.<\/strong> He<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"> established the Native School of Bombay<\/span>, later known as the Bombay Native Institution and then the Board of Education. <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Eventually, it became the renowned Elphinstone College<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Museum, Temples:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>1.<\/strong> Shankarseth was one of the wealthy donors who <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">supported the development of the Dr. Bhau Daji Lad Museum in Byculla<\/span>, which was designed by a renowned architect from London.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2.<\/strong> The <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Bhawani Shankar Temple near Nana Chowk<\/span> was built by Shankarseth in honor of his late mother, Bhawanibai Murkute.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Railways:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>1.<\/strong> The <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">first train journey in India took place on April 16, 1853<\/span>, <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">between Boribunder<\/span> and <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Thane,<\/span> covering a 34-km route managed by the Great Indian Peninsular Railway Company.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2.<\/strong> <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Sir Jamsetjee Jeejeebhoy<\/span> and <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Nana Shankarseth were part of the committee overseeing the project.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>UPSC Syllabus- Personalities in news<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Source-This post on Nana Jagannath Shankarseth is based on the article &#8220;Who was Nana Jagannath Shankarseth, the social reformer \u2018architect of Mumbai&#8216;&#8221;
