The Darien Gap is a stretch of densely forested jungle across <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">northern Colombia and southern Panama. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>2. It is roughly 60 miles (97 kilometres) across. The terrain is <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">muddy, wet and unstable.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>3. It has become a major route for <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">global human migration<\/span> despite of\u00a0no paved roads exist in the Darien Gap.<\/p>\n<p>4. The Dari\u00e9n Gap is home to the <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Embera- Wounaan and Guna<\/span> indigenous peoples. It was also inhabited by the Cueva people, who became extinct after the <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Spanish invasion of Panama in 1535.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>5. <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Maize, cassava, plantains, and bananas<\/span> are staple crops grown by local farmers in the region.<\/p>\n<p><strong>6. Why is it so dangerous?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>a) The route people take when they migrate from South America to North America is controlled by <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">criminal organisations.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>b) The route is also prone to <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">extortion, kidnapping and mass sexual assault<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>c) The <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">extreme nature of the swamp like jungle<\/span> also makes the movement in this region dangerous.<\/p>\n<p>d) <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Vector-borne, water-borne and fungal-related illnesses<\/span> are also quite common in this region.<\/p>\n<p><strong>UPSC Syllabus: Places in news<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Source-This post on Darien Gap\u00a0is based on the article &#8220;What is the Darien Gap?
