This article discusses the Hemoglobin A1C (HbA1C) Test, which is used to diagnose diabetes.
\nAccording to a nationwide study published in 2023, India has an estimated 10.13 crore people with diabetes<\/span> and another 13.6 crore people who are pre-diabetic<\/span>.<\/p>\n

1. About:<\/strong>
\na.<\/strong> It is one of the most commonly-used tests to diagnose pre-diabetes<\/span> and diabetes (both type 1 and type 2)<\/span> and to help manage diabetes.
\nb.<\/strong> It is also known as the glycated haemoglobin<\/span> or glycosylated haemoglobin test<\/span>.<\/p>\n

2. Significance<\/strong>– This blood test is vital for assessing the effectiveness of your diabetes management.
\nNote <\/strong>– Hemoglobin, a protein found in red blood cells, carries oxygen from your lungs to the rest of your body.<\/p>\n

How does the test work?<\/h2>\n

1.<\/strong> Sugar from the food, that the individual eats, enters the bloodstream and binds to the hemoglobin<\/span> in red blood cells.<\/p>\n

2.<\/strong> Everyone has some sugar attached to their hemoglobin, but individuals with pre-diabetes and diabetes tend to have higher levels.<\/span><\/p>\n

3.<\/strong> The HbA1C test measures the percentage of hemoglobin in red blood cells that is coated with sugar<\/span>.<\/p>\n

Advantage over other traditional test<\/strong><\/p>\n

1.<\/strong> Fasting and post-meal blood sugar tests measure sugar levels at specific times, whereas the HbA1C test reflects average glucose levels over a period of two to three months<\/span>.<\/p>\n

2.<\/strong> Unlike traditional tests, HbA1C isn’t influenced by recent meals<\/span>, making it more dependable and usable regardless of meal timing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
About Diabetes and its Types<\/strong><\/p>\n

1.<\/strong> Diabetes is a chronic disease<\/span> caused when either the pancreas does not produce enough insulin<\/span> or the cells in the body do not respond properly to insulin<\/span>.
\nNote – <\/b>Insulin is a hormone that regulates blood glucose.<\/p>\n

2. Types:<\/strong>
\na.<\/strong> Type 1<\/span> when pancreas does not produce enough insulin
\nb.<\/strong> Type 2<\/span> -cells in the body do not respond to insulin properly, and
\nc.<\/strong> Gestational Diabetes<\/span> \u2013 formed during pregnancy.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n
